5th graders watch president's education speech

Today president Barack Obama gave a speech about education to the nation's students.
The speech has brought a lot of criticism and many parents around the country were protesting against their kids watching the speech.
Here in Laredo one school district gave the okay for teachers to show the speech.
And as our Noraida Negron tells us, the kids had been preparing for this day.

"He's going to tell us to stay in school and we the students we need to stay in school."
That was the main message in Barack Obama’s speech and here at McDonald Elementary, fifth grade history teacher Ricardo Canizales assigned students special projects to help them understand the importance of the speech.
Ricardo Canizales, history teacher, "I think this speech is neutral and its applied to all students. I think he already has accomplished a great thing becoming president of the U.S all children should pay attention to them."
Canizales came to that conclusion after reviewing the content of the speech prior to the event.
But the controversy surrounding the speech left many teachers unsure about showing it.
"The kids were concerned about why some parents wouldn't allow some children to listen to it."
Tom Wade, watched Obama’s speech, "The first controversy was not necessary that the President will give a speech, but that there was a lesson plan associated with the speech."
But those who saw the speech say Obama didn't use it as a platform for his personal agenda.
They also say people should all be neutral and listen to what the president has to say.
"Both political parties need to just chill out, relax a little bit and get the kids educated."
The presidential speech was made available to all students of Lisd.
Students at United isd did not watch the president's speech in their classrooms.

I didn't know anybody made it to fifth grade in Laredo.The parents must have bought their way that far.

I'm vexed. People elected the first African-American President. Now these same people turn their backs on the President by not allowing their students to listen to a speech directed at education. When I was small, it would have been an honor to be acknowledge by our President. I can see where many students learned about disrespect-from their parents!

Was it in Spanish,or Laredo will not understand one word that was spoken.
