An out pour of sadness gathers in front of the home two year old Katherine Cardenas was found dead.
According to police her body was discovered inside a storage cabinet located outside of the residence.
Since word of the grief stricken news people have come to pay their respects to such a young girl taken too soon.

"Aqui estan cerquitos todos y no saber nada de esto cruelto lo que estaba pasada con ella."

Rosa lives nearby and says it’s unbelievable that no one ever knew about the abuse going on.

This neighbor's angry at these devastating circumstances.
These reactions of sadness, outrage, and concern have even made their way to the district attorney's office.

Isidro "Chilo" Alaniz - District Attorney, Webb County
"My position has always been to protect the children of our community. This case statutorily does and could potentially meet the requirements for the death penalty for capital punishment type case but it’s too early to tell."

The case is still under investigation.
However, Alaniz says authorities have some people of interest and are hoping to make an arrest very soon.

"Then at that time based on who the person is, what their criminal history, what their age is. All these other factors surrounding the case and then we'll make the difficult decision to decide how to proceed but this case will definitely be prosecuted aggressively."

She prays to god the law in Laredo holds those accountable for this gruesome crime.

"These types of capital punishment cases are not the type of cases that the district attorney's office wants to see because it means that there was a heinous crime committed and someone in our community was viciously killed."

Yvonne Martinez - Katherine’s cousin
"I’m so angry for what happened because she didn't deserve what they did to her. She's an angel."

Yvonne, nearly speechless, struggled to express herself and how she felt about her cousin's death.
But revealed Katherine was the youngest of five brothers and a sister.

"Do you think someone in your family was involved in her death? I don’t know, I cant give you details because I don’t know what exactly happened."

"Yvonne was reluctant to give us any sort of insight as to how Katherine’s mom was with her 7 children but then she told us she needed a lot of help and shouldn't of treated her kids the way she did."

"Yvonne was she a good mom? I mean would you treat your kids the way she treated them? Nope. I would never treat my son like that. I just have one son and i would never treat my son like that."

A lot of times these crimes are preventable.
Alaniz urges people in the community to be more vigilant and report any type of crime involving abuse of a child.

"I know that sometimes people think, well its none of my business, I don’t want to get involved. Well this is a classic type of case where we should get involved. When you see something that's not right, see children being neglected or mistreated its okay to call 911. These are defenseless, helpless little victims that have no voice."

Again, no arrests have been made in this case.
Funeral services for Katherine Cardenas will be held this Friday at Hernandez Lopez Funeral Home from 8 to 11 in the morning.
