Police continue investigating the homicide of a two-year-old girl and family members say many have been questioned and investigated.
Tonight, those family members are defending the mother they say has been made out by some to be negligent of her children.
The 25-year-old mother's sister says her family has been wrongly labeled as an unloving one of many problems.
But she says people have it all wrong and hopes to clear up confusion.
“Nosotros somos unidos.”
Emotional family members gather for a vigil, four days after the lifeless body of two-year-old Katherine Cardenas was discovered at a west Laredo home.
Around the corner from the church, a makeshift shrine of stuffed animals and balloons grows each day as people pay their respects.
The death of the two year old, has now been ruled a homicide and while some family members won't say who may be responsible they know one thing for sure.
“Sabemos que no fue accidente.”
“Alguen que conocen puede ser pero de la familia yo no criego.”
We know it wasn't an accident.
It could be someone they know, says the little girl's aunt, but a family member I don’t think so.
“Esto fue algo que mala gente confia uno en ellos y desforunadamente me hermana es una persona buena.”
She says this is something a bad person did, even though we confided in them.
But my sister is a good person.
Other family members have suggested the 25-year-old mother was not suitable to care for the children, but Holguin says otherwise.
“Que se figuen en lo que habla la gente no conocen la realidad no conocen la realidad.”
They need to pay attention to what they're saying, she says, people talk but don’t know the reality.
Holguin says while she finds it comforting to see people showing support, she wished support could have come sooner.
“Mi hermana ha pasado por muchas problemas ella es soltera.”
“Cuando mi herman necessitaba auda no habia nadien y ahora es muy facil para ellos decir mi hermana es mala ella cuidaba sus hijos.”
My sister had many problems, she’s a single mother when she needed help there was no one, says Holguin, now its easy to say she was a bad mother but she took care of her children.
Police have not released any new details on exactly how the baby died.
They have also not said if any family members are suspects at this time.
For now, family members are calling the death mysterious and say they, just as well as everyone else, hope to find out who did it.
