Local Judges petition for drug detox center in Laredo

By Ray Gomez

People from both sides of the border came together today to help battle drug addiction and recognize national recovery month, and while there is help for those wanting to get off drugs, many community members are pushing for something more.
Local Judges Hector and Oscar Liendo are passing around a petition asking for a drug detox center here in Laredo.
And an event held earlier this evening proved there may just be plenty of people who could benefit.
“It is possible for a drug addict to live a normal life.”
Frank Santana mentors drug users now, but says his road to being free himself was a difficult one of marijuana and heroine.
“I realized it when I got tired of being sick and tired.”
Today he is part of dozens of people setting out to make a difference in the lives of people from not only Laredo, but also Nuevo Laredo by recognizing national recovery month.
And while helping others overcome a drug habit isn't new, some say its time for something more.
Many community members lined up to sign this petition to bring a detox center to Laredo, something they say is greatly needed in the area.
“We usually have to send people outside of the city of Laredo,” says Victor Oliveros.
The plan is to ask for the resources to help bring relief to many people, who have run out of places to go.
“When they come to the point that they feel hopeless useless powerless they don’t see no light they don’t see the way out that’s hen they come to us for help,” says Juan Negrete of S.C.A.N.
“I think its gona happen its only a matter of time but it will happen.”
Meanwhile Santana says he will keep sharing his story and hopes programs like today's will help send a clear message.
“We can come to this program this activity without any drugs and enjoy it at the same time,” added Santana.
Tonight’s event wrapped up with dinner and a dance.
National recovery month has been recognized for 20 years nation wide.
This year marks the tenth year that recovery month has been celebrated right here in Laredo.
