Webb Medical Examiner Mentioned in Fort Worth Article

By Ray Gomez

The county reacts tonight to an article featured in the Fort Worth Star Telegram talking about corruption among medical examiners across the state with Webb County's Doctor Corinne Stern featured in the piece.

Commissioners Court claims they have discussed her past mistakes and as our Concetta Callahan reports, they agreed until she does something wrong here, there is no need to take action.

Members of Commissioners Court say Dr. Corinne Stern has a lot of experience and great credentials and until she demonstrates otherwise, she'll stay.

The article in the Fort Worth Star Telegram associates Webb County's Doctor Corinne Stern with autopsy blunders made by medical examiners that practice across the state.
The piece highlights her mishap in Alabama.
There she ruled the death of an infant a homicide, saying the mother suffocated her newborn, putting the mother on death row.
Other experts later testified the baby was a stillborn and all charges against the infant’s mother were dismissed.

Jerry Garza - Pct. 3, Webb County Commissioner
"One of the issues they bring up is a valid one. It's that there is a little oversight when it comes to the specialty of medical examiners and medical examination and the article very clearly says it's because there is no patient to complain."

"The county recognizes that Dr. Stern has made mistakes in the past, but say those mishaps have not affected her performance as a medical examiner for Webb County."

After all, she did receive a favorable evaluation by commissioner’s court back in may.

"I think she's done a very good job and until we have reason to question that I think that her credentials and her performance up to now speaks for itself."

Dr. Stern is the highest paid Webb County official, banking $175,000 a year.
Her job is to reveal her findings in each autopsy by giving the cause and manner of death.
But in recent cases she's kept some of that information from the public.
We still don’t know how baby Katherine Cardenas died.
And what happened to the man recently tasered by police?
It’s the county's policy to disseminate that information to the public in a timely manner and we're all still waiting.

"As far as why she hasn't been giving out the information that is being requested, I can only speculate that it may have something to do with the investigation or for some other technical purpose."

We did contact Dr. Stern.
She is out of town and told us that she did not want to comment at this time.

I like her income level with her lack of actual "work". I know doctors that work harder and don't earn near as much after business overhead expenses.

LAREDO NEEDS TO FIND A NEW MEDICAL EXAMINER. ARE YOU WAITING FOR HER TO MAKE ANOTHER MISTAKE TO REPLACE HER? DON'T TAKE ANOTHER CHANCE PLEASE. SHE DID SEND AN INNOCENT PERSON TO JAIL.
