City Council votes to rezone for an 8 liner business, against another

By Ray Gomez

At Monday's City Council meeting yet another owner of an 8-liner establishment, located at 916 Houston was asking for a zoning change so it can open.
Several showed up to speak-out against the proposal, including the owners of two adjacent businesses and a member of the Heritage Foundation.
In the end the City Council voted to deny the permit to re-zone the property for use as an 8-liner business.
However, later in the meeting a second re-zoning permit for an 8-liner establishment in the 12 hundred block of San Bernardo came up for a vote.
The council approved that one.
There are currently over five thousand 8-liner machines registered here in Laredo.

Isn't the Zoning Department the one that raided the homeless with their Nazi troops?? Are they the same people that interchange the zones to accomodate the 8-liners??? isn't Narvaez the one in front of the operation against the homeless?? Zoning Narvaez maquinitas= CORRUPTION

Well, so many years with few families in the county and city government that those restaurants and few other things for the barrio is all you can get from the Government that you elected in the past. If you want another type of city then you have to elect better government.

These money laundering facilities are thriving in Laredo. Imagine what were to happen when our entire nations organized crimals find out that money can be laundered in Laredo with the full cooperation of the Laredo City Council? You think that crime in Laredo is bad now. Just wait till next year?

It's a shame that the only forms of entertainment in Laredo is eating, drinking, shopping & gambling. Let's face it, the majority of Laredoans lack the financial means to entertain themselves outside of "the barrio" but as long as there's a profit to be made, it doesn't matter how it's done or who it hurts....

it goes to show you no rebate no permit, trying to get legal business in downtown area is work thats why its easier to issue a permit with a rebate attached.give us a break

Why are some Laredoans so "persinados"? Why can't it be made legal? People go to Vegas or even nearby Kickapoo to gamble. You know that profit can be made; why not try to incorporate the "maquinitas" to the revamping of downtown Laredo? Get the sticks out of the behinds and stop making it seem that people are getting killed with the maquinitas. Thats why people are hiding the money and not getting taxed for the city's benefit.

Since the limit is $5.00 per prize that means the machines located in HEB are illegal, they have prizes that are over that limit.

Laredo city councils must be "camaradas"(if you know what I mean) with the 8 liner owners. It's no wonder, there are so many problems with them. Maybe it's time to contact the state or feds to see what can be done.

Wow. Yet another crappy business going up in an already crappy part of Laredo. Might as well just put up a gun store, liquor store, and pawn shop on the same block. What happened to trying to preserve and restore the downtown area? Instead of having nice restaurants and retail shops that invite pedestrians to walk around downtown, city council goes an approves another sorry excuse for a business. Great job. Way to take a step backward
