A four-year-old boy is in the hospital for something his mother says could have been avoided if the school nurse would have done her job correctly. Now she’s speaking out about the incident in hopes that other parents and school officials are paying attention.
Only days after Trick-or-Treating with his family, Angel Carillo is now in a Laredo hospital, thanks to what his mother describes as poor judgment by his elementary school nurse:
“I told him to walk up to me. He couldn’t walk, so I had to carry him all the way from school; two or three blocks away from school.”
Marissa Carrillo arrived at Alma Pierce Elementary at three o’ clock Monday to pick her son up from school, and found him extremely pale, his fingertips turning purple.
Administrators told Carillo her son had been feeling sick, and having trouble breathing. He was taken to the school nurse around two in the afternoon. She took his temperature and said he was fine, but Angel was really having an asthma attack, and was sent back to class. Gasping for air where he waited for one hour, for mom to arrive.
He was taken to the doctor, who in turn said he needed to be admitted to the hospital immediately:
“They should have called me right then and there his medical history says he has asthma they would have called me I would have been there.”
“Mrs. Carrillo says the incident could have been avoided and she wonders just how many other students have been put in the same situation.”
“I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it. That’s why they have nurses at school to prevent all this.”
“He didn’t have to be here in the hospital, he didn’t have to.”
Mrs. Carillo says doctors are asking Angel to stay in the hospital one more day because his oxygen levels are not back to normal yet.
We did ask Laredo Independent School District to comment on the incident:
“Nurses at LISD are trained professionals who deeply care about all their students.
Patricia Keck, Director of Health Services, will be looking into the situation to make sure all policies and procedures were followed.”

I dont know, call me crazy, but I actually go the extra mile to ensure my children are ok because sometimes there are idiots working for the district. Im not defending the nurse at all.

Yes the school nurse is at fault, but When my child goes to school a little sick and worse if he/she couldnt even walk 3 blocks to school, as a parent, you better be sure I' m gonna call the teacher and nurse to let them know to call me should his/her condition worsen just in case there is an idiot nurse like the one at that school.

You're the Corrient am wtf. How much more evidence do you need? Your speculations are full of it, just like you. You accuse people of judging, but aren't you judging as well? why the double standard? Only you can judge? Since you're such a medical expert, why don't you ask the child's doctor if it was asthma or not. The news said he was going to stay in the hospital another day because his oxygen levels were not where they had to be. So what's the problem, medical expert? What an ignoramous

"What's going on in the world today" is another ignorant person. Your comments don't make any sense. And how do you know that the people blogging here are not professionals? Have you met us? Do you know us? You're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts. he wasn't just sick; he was very seriously ill. Of course the parents should make a big deal about it. You mention communication. All those forms parents fill out are there for a reason. That is the communication. Wise up!

I am a full time working mother, and At the beginning of the school year I make time to get to know the staff that will be involved with my children during the school year, just to let them know of any illnesses my children have. I always tell my children to tell their teacher to call me if they are feeling sick. I would like to thank all the teachers at newman elem. Keep up the good work.

Hey so like you people don't know both sides, yet you are ready to judge. People are horrible creatures, and they will try to destroy the integrity of the professional. You need to ask yourself, Is this person have personal problems with the nurse. It sounds like it because I've seen people with asthma attacks, and it was not how mother described it. I just want to add that people will try to get revenge on someone else not caring who's at stake. This time it's the poor child.Gente Corriente

I say it's Carrillo's fault that the child got sick. I remember when I was a kid, parents wouldn't make such a big deal if a child got sick. It's a human error. All these people complaining are obviously not professionals, but they are teachers and nurses without a license. I feel bad for this child because parents are teaching their children to become untrustworthy individuals. I don't think its about teachers or nurses getting their paycheck. It's about parents communicating.

It sounds like "concerned parent"-the blogger is attacking the parent. what idiocy! How much more obvious can it get?? Most parents work and we don't have time to builod "rapport" with the school nurse. We send in all those forms that they ask us for, in good faith, for the protection of the children. Do they even look at them? Are you accusing the parent of deliberately holding back information that would ensure her son's well-being? That is a grossly ignorant and STUPID thing to say!

Looking into this also means more time to change the log entries. Ms Carrillo should request the logs with documentation as to theirt timely entry.

A simple phone call should have been made to avoid this situation.medical records have what the child has.it is the job of the nurse as the child walks in to get checked to go over that paper work.at the start of school year parents are asked to fill out everything but for what? it wasnt even checked! one simple procedure from the nurse could have avoided this. in the morning the child was not sick through out the day is when it happened. i dont think the mom would leave out vital info
31667076concerned parent said on Thursday, Nov 5 at 7:17 PM
There are always two sides to every story. What is the rapport between the parent and the nurse? I have worked with plenty of patients who omit vital information to their care. if the mother had told the nurse how severe this child's asthma was, then the nurse would've taken a different course of action. Parents think that it is only a matter of sending kids to school without bothering to open the lines of communication with all school personel.
31665136How in the world? said on Thursday, Nov 5 at 6:14 PM
Wait, the school nurse and/or other officials knew the kid was having trouble breathing and no one thought to call the mother and especially 911? Amazing. Simply amazing. I wish the media would name the school officials involved so LISD can't just transfer them to another s school in the district (assuming the allegations are true).

I think that the staff at L.I.S.D.now days just want to pick up a paycheck at the end of the month. They don't care about our children. My son goes to Milton Elem. and just last week The coach flipped me the bird in front of the kids just 'cause I told him to do his job right. And when I asked the Vice Principal to comment he said " We are understaffed, we have to deal with what we got." What does that say for our children. If this boy would have died they would just take it as oh well, too bad.

I think that there is a culture inside the LISD in which everyone wants get paid a big check, they bully the students all the time but when they are accountable for a bad action, then we have a lot of excuses to cover and to wash their hands, specially with the kids.

This a case of negligence, this nurse needs to be accountable, it was criminal and she needs to be liable for that.

I hope she understands that this little boy could have Passed Out and Died!!!! As an adult, it is a horrible feeling grasping for air. I can imagine how this little boy felt; helpless and in pain.

The actions of L.I.S.D. personnel whether being a nurse, teacher, ect. are now being totally unacceptable. I remember back when I was in school, if we had as much as a headache our parents were called. Now days these administrators are putting our children in danger on a daliy basis. Just last year my own son had a head concussion during P.E. class and when I wanted answers the coach answered, " I did not see what happened & I don't want to get involved. WHATS GOING ON WITH THESE PEOPLE!!!!

I've had asthma all my life, as a kid i constantly needed an inhaler, I never told anybody at school because they wanted to take it away from me, something about it being a controlled substance. The one year that they found out & took it away I ended up in the hospital for a week. I had an asthma attack, no warning at all, & the nurses would not give me my inhaler, so yeah I'm on the mom's side. Oh & to 8:29am anonymous, asthma has symptoms, but no mom can tell if it'll get worst.
31637284local health professional said on Thursday, Nov 5 at 10:45 AM
In defense of the mother asthma is a sudden onset and mom probably had no way of knowing how serious the child would get later in the day. Having said that, the "nurse" (should have, could have whatever)been able to see obvious signs and symptoms. The nurse has the medical records for evry child and this child probably had been with the nurse at some other time. I would hope the school system would haave implemented a protocol after the cardenas case and have strict policies to abide by it.

We will look into this? What malarky. As the so called director she was informed that same afternoon. Only after it hit the local airwaves by your informative station did she make this comment.

I am glad this case did not turn to a tragedy. The school needs to look into the educational background of this nurse. I dont even think she had a degree because if she did she would have known the signs to look for. As for the mother why do you send you child to school if you see them like that. You should also have known the signs because you know he has asthma.

This is the second time in which a nurse in LISD does not perform, The other nurse failed to call CPS and Baby Katherine is dead, seems that The " I dont care" or the "is not my job" are the vices that we have in LISD.
31627646like the words said on Thursday, Nov 5 at 9:00 AM
like always " we are looking into the matter " then nothing happens, we need to clean up the whole staff.what happen to the others did they get arrested for not calling C.P.S. or they still looking into the matter!!!
31626579Anna said on Thursday, Nov 5 at 8:02 AM
Being in the medical field, I know there are signs to look for asthma attacks. This nurse demonstrated nothing but mere incompetence. I hope this individual is discharged, because it is this type of incompetence that causes medical mistakes. Just as they fired the the man for not reporting abuse they need to do the same. School districts have to hire individuals and with experience and need to compensate them well, to avoid incompetent people in critical positions.

The nurse saw all the signs and symptoms of an asthma exacerbation. Is she really an RN.
