Councilman suggests making animal shelter a city department

By Ray Gomez

A call made over the airwaves for donations to the animal shelter has a local Councilman offering ideas for a solution.

Shelter officials denied they were ever out of food because of aid from a private donor, but Councilman Mike Garza says the funding they receive from the City is not enough.

He actually suggests making it a City department, and that it has been brought up with Carlos Villarreal, the City Manager:

"I know the City Manager has talked about doing a commitment to bring in that house now, to make it a City department, so none of these issues would occur."

The City entered a contract with the animal shelter back on October 1st, providing over $200,000 in funding.

i think you should first fix one department then try and add another one. The Solid Waste Department sure needs fixing. We have had the same number of trucks for years and they keep breaking down on us they don't fix them because they don't have the money for parts.

we need to educate the people here on responsibilty when taking on pets. I might add that the city could be more aggressive in enforcing bylaws as well. So disgusted with the way people here treat the animals ....

What the City of Laredo provides is more than enough, Due to the negligence and corruption in the past with this shelter we need more than your solution. We need to audit this shelter first and after that the city needs to monitor their practices independently from the Health Department due to the favoritism involved.

Why don't you fund the Animal Shelter out of your own pocket? What minimal thinking you have councilman. Laredoans, living in the top 10 of poverty in our nation are paying over the top water rates because of you. Now you want us to pay for the animal shelter? Do you have any idea how much this is going to cost us? Do you have any idea on how to run a basic business? Mr. Garza, you're talking about another city dept. that include too much in the long run. Spay and Neuter is the answer.
