Grandmother killed after being hit by pickup truck

By Ray Gomez

A grandmother is dead after being hit by a truck while crossing the street with her family; her husband, a hero for saving their young granddaughter.

At around 6:30 Friday evening, a white pickup truck struck three pedestrians near the intersection of Chicago and Juarez.

A woman in her 50's suffered most of the impact and was transported to Laredo Medical Center with severe internal injuries where she later died.

The man and little girl who accompanied the woman suffered just minor injuries, but the actions of the man may have saved the life of their granddaughter as he pulled her away from the oncoming vehicle.

The driver stopped and administered aid to those he hit and police say he didn't show any signs of intoxication:

"Since there is a death in this case a sample of his blood will be tested to make sure that there are no toxins in his body that would inhibit his ability to drive a vehicle."

Police plan to complete a full investigation of the accident.

So sad to hear. My condolences to the family. At least the driver stopped to render aid.. that's a rare thing in this city.

this is tragic. I too am surprised to see that the driver stopped too and rendered aid, which is good to see. News stated they crossed close to intersection, did they not cross at a light? at 6:30 pm it is dark and dangerous to "jay" walk across, my condolences to the family

Unfortunate event and condolences to the family said on Friday, Dec 4 at 4:35 AM

The unfortunate event happens to be one of my neighbors. The little girl plays with my kids and it is a very tragic thing for the family to lose their family member. She was a dedicated grandmother who made sure that the little girl would go to school everyday. The whole family goes on walks every day and walk to the nearby market. Unfortunately this was one that we would never expect to see happen. The grandmother had troubles walking and she sometimes walked using a walker. She will be missed.
