Laredoans line up outside stores days before Black Friday

By Ray Gomez

Holiday shoppers will do just about anything to take advantage of a sale. With Black Friday quickly approaching, Laredoans were already reserving a spot in line on Wednesday.

Here in Laredo holiday shoppers were already setting up to reserve their spot for the sales on Friday, which means a Thanksgiving in the cold outside the store.

Men, women and children lined the outside of Best Buy, looking to take advantage of a sale that only two days away. With a cold front heading in, how will they survive the next few nights?

"Jackets, sleeping bags, maybe a tent, probably a tent those always help out."

This all in preparation of Black Friday, the craziest day of shopping most cities will see in an entire year.

Laredo is no exception, as holiday shoppers have been known to stampede anything in their way including employees and even the front doors of a business. But even with this in mind, some stores support the enthusiasm that comes with the biggest day of shopping in North America.

"We encourage people to come and line up we obviously will have some police patrolling to make sure everything is alright and nothing gets out of hand, or anything along those lines. They can bring their mattresses tents, barbeque pits we are more than happy to accommodate them."

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the fact those camping out in front of the store are prepared to have their Thanksgiving feast from their spot in line.

"Both my families cook and they end up bringing the food out to me, to us; I get the best of both worlds. I can't stuff myself more.”

“So you are going to have your dinner right out here in front of Best Buy?

“Basically, yes."

After speaking with management from some stores here in town, they do not promise to honor anyone’s spot in line. Which means, when the doors open, all bets are off.

No whatever we aren't stupid like you... we just don't think that saving a few bucks is worth the effort and no-lifeness involved in the process of lining up for up to two days. Of course we can afford those things that's why we don't line up to save, idiot!

Who knows the total population of laredo and communities within 80 shopping miles? Allrighty - then why in heck does Laredo make a BIGGIE deal about "Mexican shoppers" - gimme a breako!!!!! Merchants need to court us - does not help if the metro bus is kept out - we should all boycott the mall and go cheaper elsewhere.

There is no way I'm pitching a tent to spend the night in front of a department store, with my child, and during a cold front just to save a few bucks! No thank you! Yeah, just so those few bucks I saved can go to my doctor's bills after catching a cold. That's what the internet is for. It's safe, it's warm, and it's free from all the pushers and shovers that will "literally" pull things out of your hands if it's the last item on sale! Even if it's not their size! Went once, NEVER AGAIN!!!

Is it a Laredo complex or just human nature? American ideology says the individual is important, and as such we place our needs over the needs of others. Other cultures/nations teach that the needs of the community come before the individual.

Yes because of that complex I missed a very important game last week... I find it pathetic to make such a line for a deal that you will find online in a few weeks, it always happens

I think people in Laredo have complexes. It is the "I have to be first before anyone else", complex. It can be seen in the way people here drive, shop or attend a buffet. These lines happen at the Washington's Birthday Parade route and until the state police decided better and prohibited the practice, Laradoans would sit in cars on loop 20 shoulder the entire night before Easter to get a good spotat Lake CasaBlanca. Pathetic.
