Utility workers rescue baby, honored as heroes

By Ray Gomez

Some city of Laredo utility workers are being recognized as heroes for saving a one-year-old baby's life.

A boy makes a frantic 911 call on November 20th around noon as his family is on his way to the hospital to take his sister.

Monica Martinez, a 911 operator for the Laredo Police Department, says that call was hard to take but the first thing they are trained to do is to calm down the caller.

On the other side of the call, a couple of utility workers were waived down as the mother of the child was asking for their help:

"We stopped, I came out of the truck and this lady came out with the baby crying hysterically her baby was dying."

According to the workers the baby wasn't breathing and was already turning blue.

They call 911 but already the brother of the child was on the phone.

Eventually the utility workers were able to stabilize the baby and got her to breath on her own. Today they are getting recognized for being heroes. They have not been able to get in contact with the family.

"I've been trying to find the baby's mom cause we all bought him a little gift. So we can give it to her we don't know were she's at or where she lives."

The utility workers are looking into taking a CPR class.

How different it is when city workers go the extra mile to serve their community, This is fresh air to the city of Laredo, The rest of the city workers need to learn from these extraordinary Men. We need more of these type of City employees and not the corrupt that play the favoritism games.
