Just as promised, the director of Guatemala’s Export Association has arrived in Laredo.
His arrival is said to be the evidence city officials needed to prove that trips abroad really do pay off for the city.
It may be good news for city officials, but after taking a close look at what Laredo has to offer, what did officials of Guatemala think?
We spoke to Guatemala Export Director Fernando Herrera to find out for ourselves.
The World Trade Bridge and International Airport are only some of the key spots put on the list for Guatemala’s export director to see.
“Industrial parks and railroads. We’ve got quite a bit to do later on tonight,” says Airport Manager Jose Flores.
Guatemalan Exporters' Association Director Fernando Herrera is in town one day after checking out Houston’s facilities and says he's got a list of his own.
Herrera says for Guatemala, its important to find new routes and new ways of accessing the North American market, one that’s quick and secure for cargo.
He goes on to say Laredo is a point of interest for them, since much of their trade is headed for the United States.
According to Herrera, 42 percent of exports, everything from fresh flowers and fruit, to manufactured goods will come to the U.S.
City officials say they hope visitors see Laredo is the place to be and so far Herrera says things look good.
Laredo has great infrastructure he says, sufficient space to handle cargo and great technology at bridges to help expedite the process.
Guatemalan officials say their mission is to develop Guatemala as a world exporter.
City officials say its clear Laredo can help.
“That Laredo is a good access point to new markets to Texas and central us to Canada.”
Of course one impressive trip won't be enough to seal the deal with Guatemala.
The export director says they still have to look into routes through Mexico and figure out if the idea to go through Laredo will work long-term.
Herrera plans on being back in February for further discussions.

Should ask him to take back all the illegal Guatemalans living in Laredo.
