The Associated Press has reported that Laredo could soon be the largest city without a bookstore in the United States.
This after B.Dalton announced they will close their doors sometime in January.
When B Dalton closes the nearest book store will be 150 miles away in San Antonio.
According to the associated press the closing will create a literary void in a city with a high illiteracy rate.
The head librarian at the Laredo Public Library agrees that Laredo needs a bookstore.
Maria Soliz - Librarian
" As it is we've seen our circulation go up even during these hard economic times. I imagine that it will continue to increase.
Librarians at the City of Laredo library and other residents have come together forming a committee to bring a major bookstore to Laredo.
They are preparing a plan to present to major bookstore companies.

The idea of not having a bookstore in Laredo is very sad. B. Dalton was not an ideal place to go have your coffee, relax, and sit and read. This may be a good thing, though. Bringing a bigger bookstore like Barnes and Noble will make those types of services available to the community. The fact that the city has a high illiteracy rate increases the need for a bookstore where parents can take their children, browse, and become involved. Lets go for the best.

Laredoans will just tear through the aisles of the bookstore and destroy everything. I wouldn't put a bookstore here.

Not everyone knows of the Internet much less how to use it. To visit a bookstore is to have an experience that will be yours. You can browse without having to figure out what to type. Online is not so easy, unless you know what you're looking for. Visual graphics does not compare to on hand. You end up finding things you didn't know of: you can apply this to everything - food, clothes.

The store is closing because Barnes and Noble decided to close the chain of B. Dalton. I was informed the store was doing really well because it catered to surrounding cities even schools. That the city is illiterate means that there should be bookstores to broaden the horizons of the younger generations, but business is business; they would never risk it even if the figures show they could profit from a city like this: by the border, multicultural, and the biggest import/export in America.

Has anyone in Laredo heard of the Internet? I'll always purchase my reading material from a low cost source.

Books are expensive and most of Laredo is illiterate! We should have more used book sales, like the one on that church by Guadalupe

That is only part of the story, it goes on to say how illiterate the people of Webb county and Laredo are.Maybe that explains why the BOOK store is closing.
