Border Patrol mustangs unveiled to the media

By KGNS News

Mustangs are considered American legend and our Laredo Borer Patrol sector got four of them as they implement their horse patrol.

They are about three years old and are called Laredo One, Two, Three and Four.
These mustangs got here over the weekend and are already getting training by the agents.
Robert L. Harris - Laredo Sector Chief
" We are on training mode right now but we are going to be fully operational by January so they will be deployed on the border."

The horses come from the wild horse and burro program and they have been adopted by the Laredo sector.
In the adoption program the mustangs are rescued from the wild and are trained by inmates at a correctional facility in Colorado.
Something else that the inmates made as part of the rehabilitation program are leather saddles with the Border Patrol logo.
Paul Mcguire - Wild Horse & Burro Program
" Under a law passed by congress in 1970 has really preserve them and protect them as symbol of our western heritage."

" According to the border patrol agents they will get at least 10 years of service from the horses and also keeping a tradition from the Border Patrol alive."

" The mustangs are really ideal for the challenging work that the border patrol does everyday in our nations border. They are hardy breed."

Here in Laredo the chief says the horses will be put in areas known for drug and human smuggling.

" They are going to be a highly mobile unit. We are going to put them in our hot spot areas and in areas that are not accessible by vehicle or a.t.v."

Meanwhile the Border Patrol can't wait to show off their new mustangs.
They are looking to unveil them at the Washington celebration parade in February.

" We have featured mustangs in a number of high profile parades including president Obama's inauguration parade their past year."

In the meantime the horses will be training night and day to get ready to protect the Laredo community.

The Laredo sector is looking to get additional mustangs by the end of January or February.
They will have a contest to name the four mustangs.
Different schools will participate and students will write an essay.
The competition will also serve to teach the students the history of the mustangs.
