Days of cooler temperatures are ahead but school officials say it will not affect class schedules, at least for now.
Classes for UISD, LISD and Catholic Diocese students have not been cancelled as of now.
Representatives of United ISD say they've received calls from parents asking if school would be cancelled this week.
Officials say at this time there is no need to make any cancellations but do say the best thing to do is to stay tuned to media outlets for the latest information.

I did not appreciate the comment made in this mornings newcast about the weather and the cancellation of schools. It is a "BIG DEAL" when it gets to be very cold. Many people do not have heaters or places to keep warm and to "JUST WEAR A JACKET" is also dificult to many peolple especially kids who do not have the means of keeping warm. It may be "NO BIG DEAL" to you but it is a concern to others.

Only in Laredo. It is not a big deal. Children are not being taught outdoors. They are inside and I'm positive all schools are equiped with working heaters. And yes I do have children. This "pobresito its too cold outside he/ she cant go to school" is BS. Now if it was snowing or the roads were slick with ice then thats another story because it would be dangerous to drive the kids to school.

Its just another way parents can excuse their children not to go to school. Now days children have it made: air conditioned buses , no school when its 30 degrees outside. How about we close the schools when it rains too. Some children dont have rain jackets.

Quit saying it is or isn't a big deal. If school districts think it's best for thier schools to be closed, they have the right to close them. People who think schools shouldn't close are more than likely parents who can't stand to have their kid(s) for one more day at home. Teachers need more breaks from those types of kids too. LOL

people who say close the schools most likely dont care about their childs education or probably dont work and/or recieve government assistance. Some of us need to work unfortunatly, and we dont get weeks and months off like the teachers do. They get enough break from the kids. All they need to do is wear layers of clothing and big jackets or if they dont have big jackets like my kids dont because we rarely get this wether, wear multiple jackets.

35075844Grab a jacket or blanket if you must said on Thursday, Jan 7 at 2:40 PM
Geez people, it's not a blizzard, it's a cold front. Layer it up and let's go! Grab a few sweaters, jackets, or blankets if you must. I had to work today and had no choice but to take my 7 month old to day care in this cold weather. So what did I do? Sweaters, blankets, mittens, and hoodies, and we were out the door. So what's the problem???

Very cold? 30 degrees very cold? Please. Sure, a jacket won't cut it. That's why you layer clothing. These kids keep getting weaker and weaker by the generation.

They really should close the schools if it's going to be below freezing for a few hours. The infrastructure in the schools is old and wasn't designed for cold extremes. The last thing you want is a pipe bursting and wastewater flowing all over. Then the kids will be wet AND cold and God forbid they succumb to hypothermia like that Titanic feller.

Both districts have varied economic students. Those who live in improvished areas, do deserve to have the schools closed. School districts are given bad weather days by the state. They should used them instead of waiting to see how many students show up and how much money the state will provide the district with for the low student attendance. Makes you wonder why these superintents operate the way they do and why the districts are in such bad shape..

Maybe some of these concerned parents could sell their cell phones, Escalades, or Coach bags and buy their kids a jacket. Seriously, we're not under a blizzard warning. Plus, if these kids are really coming from such impoverished households, schools will have a better heating system than their homes in many cases.

Anyone remember the old saying, "I used to walk 6 miles to school in the snow, uphill both ways." Nowadays it'd be, "I used to walk into the garage... if it wasn't too cold... then I'd get in the car... and hit the drive-thru for a mocha-latte." And say to myself, "hahaha... there's no school today!"

IF THE WEBB COUNTY TAX OFFICE CLOSED DUE TO COLD WEATHER, I THINK KIDS SHOULD STAY HOME, ESPECIALLY WITH ALL THIS SWINE FLU GOIN ON

"People who think schools shouldn't close are more than likely parents who can't stand to have their kid(s) for one more day at home." That is a very strong statement. I would love to stay home with my daughter but we have a mortgage and bills to pay. Many of us cannot afford to lose a day of work. Both school district have assured us that they are well heated and the children will be fine. Comments like that are never appreciated by hard working parents. Think before you speak!

Parents are the ones who ultimately decide whether they send their kids to school or keep them home. I say build a good work ethic and good character by sending them. If parents keep their kids home, attendance-generated funds suffer. It's all about the money, not cold or safety. If schools open, they will be looking at high absence rates, which translate into less money, but schools can use their weather days. Good thing we don't see this often.

The fact is that many students stay home and the districts attendance rate falls with the result being a decrease in WADA funds. For funding purposes chools should have been closed. The debate as to whether schools be open or closed for lack of jackets, purses or bling bling is just that-a debate until attendance money is concerned.

look, both school districts do not care about the kids, the districts only care about money. you prople know this. it's all about money.
35144914el perro said on Friday, Jan 8 at 1:47 PM
It is about the money, money that won’t be generated as a result of high absenteeism. Don’t believe me? Ask your favorite educator how attendance was for today then put the bean counters to determine how much was lost. It’s not just that its thirty degrees outside. We know kids can/should wear layered clothing, mitts/gloves, and jackets, and, that schools have heaters, provide food and shelter, but the fact remains that there is a high absence rate when the temperature drops this low.

the more and more you al open your mouths the more idiotic and uneducated you all sound......its a shame the level of thinking some of you have regarding a couple of days of winter....children are weak now a days......and if you as a parent deny that, then your probably the cause if it.....shut up and layer up is correct......

so just because its cold we shouldnt take our children to school so if its so hot like in the summer we shouldnt sent our kids to school because its so hot they can be sweating and everything either way they still have to go its not snowing just like the comments say sent them with gloves, scrafs, layers of clothing and a hat for them to not freeze there ears
35167884??? said on Friday, Jan 8 at 7:01 PM
I don't have any kids, but if I did, I would not want them to go to school. I could barely stand the cold offices in the district. Do as you all please, and do what you think is right! (By the way, the county is always looking for an excuse to close.) Don't believe me? Wait and see....I'll happen again.

Ok so does anyone know what the absence rate was and how much in lost revenue that translated to?

Take it from someone who grew up in snow, Laredo hasn't seen the day when schools actually have to close. I used to go to school with snow on the ground. Laredo wouldnt know what to do if they ever got snow like what goes on up north. Closing a school just because the temp is 30 degrees is not a good reason for that.
