Some officials say Laredo's "Largest Inland Port" status threatened

By KGNS News

Laredo has held the title as the country’s largest inland port for years, but some Laredoans feel perhaps the city isn't doing enough to keep its title

Recently other border towns have been expanding to rival the commercial and industrial status of the Gateway City. About 10 years ago, the city of Laredo began talks about the construction of a 5th bridge to Mexico.

During that same time the city of McAllen did some planning of their own and this week their 3.2-mile long bridge became a reality, leaving some wondering how this new port of entry would affect Laredo.

I believe it has more to do with apathy than "our leaders". One can clearly see this at the local university campus. Apathy about voting, apathy about volunteering, etc. Stop pointing the finger at others and start pointing the finger at ourselves. What have WE done for Laredo lately?

Have you ever thrown 150 thousand dollars per year in the trash? If you have a City Manager like Carlitos it is just like throwing money away in the garbage.

This is to those who say "forget McAllen". If you pull up the US Metropolitan Stats, McAllen is already LARGER than laredo. McAllen has more to offer companies than Laredo. McAllen is the countries 8th Largest inland port, and now that they have the new bridge that will change. What can Laredo offer companies. NOTHING that McAllen doesn't already have. As far as rail and air logistics, those don't help with jobs. I've said it before and I will say it again. GET MANUFACTURING IN LAREDO!

Don't worry about McAllen , worry about San Antonio .. McAllen will not pass Laredo . San Antonio plns on moving th rail traffic and air cargo traffic aay from Laredo and if the city of laredo is not careful , this could happen . Brooks USA now has the International status it wanted for years now . Mexican planes can now bypass Laredo ..

When I saw Carlitos yesterday on Pro8news he gave me the impression of George W. Bush from Aug. 2001 when Bush ignored the Presidential Daily Briefings given to him by Dr. Condi. 9/11 came a short month later. Does 9/11 have to happen in order to smell the coffee?

Laredo has always been a corrupt city and it is partly our fault as citizens because we either vote for these fools with their promises of "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" rather than on what they can do to help the citizens of Laredo as a whole not just cause of their wealth or because we do not go out and vote.

I agree. They should get rid of Carlos Villarreal. He is as old school patron as it gets. Look at the history of what has happened since he has been City Manger, not to mention the hundreds of thouasands of dollars in law suits the City has paid out due to Carlos' poor leadership.

Whataburger - that is such an ignorrant thing to say (move out), that will not solve our problems it people like you along with our dumbfounded politicos that are halting our progress. It's funny that is same thing Hector "Tito" Garcia said to a group of local business men, "if you don't like it here - move to McAllen" - yeah that will move us forward.

City leaders, please get rid of Carlos Villarreal. He does not speak for me. He is too old-fashioned. I saw him yesterday on Pro8news; Jesus, this man is so full of himself. Dr. Landeck, if you got rid of Dovalina, you can get rid of Carlitos.

Contiued from earlier, Laredo needs to go after manufacturing to put thier companies here and not more logistics. That base is well covered. NO city will grow with just tourism and logistics. Get us some manufacturing companies and the rest will follow. And yes the Mcallan's metropolitan area is larger than Laredo's metropolitan area. So technically that area is larger than Laredo and if Laredo wants to catch up GET MANUFACTURING COMPANIES!

I've said it many times, Laredo will not grow until they get a manufacturing base. It is the same distance from Monterrey to McAllen as it is from Monterrey to Laredo, McAllen is out growing Laredo because they have a manufacturing sector. With that comes the service companies that supply the manufacturing sector. You get the jobs, taxes and other things from both of those. ALL LAREDO HAS is tourism and logistics. Come on, that will not provide enough for a city to grow. Finally someone see this

Speaking up said on Thursday, Jan 14 at 11:42 AM

NO matter what our officials say and do... they are not sophisticated enough to take our city to the next level, seems that they are still stuck with the small town mentality. First of all, no education and just speak and act out of opinion with out any knowledge behind, good example, Tito Garcia. Secondly, the community needs to vote and take action, to speak up. Are we going to let this uneducated dunces run our city? Let's open our eyes Laredo...

because our "illustrious" local leaders are too busy playing "la polical" with their camaradas, Laredo's status is going down the sewer to the Rio Grande. McAllen will outgrow Laredo and become the leading port..pobre Laredo, it will continue to be the the "backwater" town, it deserves to be. Wake up Laredenses and demand action before we shrivel up. Viva Laredo!
