High school students are taking to the World Wide Web to post videos of themselves doing extra curricular activities in class.
Two months ago several Martin High School students thought posting a video of them in detention would be funny.
But school district officials are not laughing.
This is video posted on You Tube by Martin High School students.
In the video they specifically mentioned that they are in detention.
As we continue to watch this video there is clearly no teacher present and these students are alone in the classroom.
At one point they get on top of the desks to dance or even strike a pose.
Something they may seem is funny but the superintendent says it's not funny at all.
Dr. Marcus Nelson - LISD Superintendent
"We are embarrassed by what we saw in the video and we don't tolerate that type of behavior and environment in the classrooms."
It’s clear the students are using a cell phone to record this video.
Also in the video you can see that another student is using his phone to take pictures of what's happening.
So is there a policy on having cell phones at school or in the classroom?
" We want to embrace technology but we also know the Internet is a very dangerous tool that can bring embarrassment to the district and eventually hurts students in a way."
Also in this video, the students are seen looking at a video website from a classroom computer, something LISD superintendent says that is violating policy of Internet use.
" We have filtering software that is designed to keep kids away from accessing certain sites that we think are inappropriate during school usage."
LISD officials say cell phones are becoming a problem at school and hope students and teachers are watching this video and take it as an example.
" When we are in school is really time to take care of teaching and learning. That is what needs to be happening in our classrooms."
According to Dr. Nelson, they are conducting a full investigation on this matter.
He says they will make sure to take disciplinary action on the students and staff pending the outcome of the investigation.

Is that what our tax-paying dollars are getting us? Where are the teachers at? If anything the school district should be held accountable and earn our money!!!!!!
36586459El rector? said on Friday, Jan 29 at 7:28 AM
Why ask about the teachers? Who is in charge? Was it the most highly paid ($107K per year) principal in LISD who was brought over from UISD and whose brothers are the district CFO and Board of trustee member?
36591639Its not the technology said on Friday, Jan 29 at 7:34 AM
Cellphones are not the problem, lack of supervision is the problem.
36591879Anna said on Friday, Jan 29 at 7:35 AM
All the superintendent is worried about how it is bad press. He does not mention the neglect of the students. Where is the supervision? I think this is a good insight to the true happenings in schools. I work with high school students and let me tell you this is actions that occur daily. The district and teachers and principals should be held accountable not the students. s

Man, I don't remember detention being like that when I was in high shool! I actually had to do work and eat lunch in that classroom...very embarrasing. Talk about how times have changed!!!

The focus of this story should have been the lack of supervision not the fact the kids had cell phones. What would you expect from the students without an adult around? I wonder how long they were left alone.

There are 9 comments on this blog and none of them bring up the REAL issue...where are the parents?! I know that kids are left under teacher supervision while at school, but teacher's ARE NOT BABYSITTERS! Let's face it, the kids in this video are at in-school suspension for a reason...the reason? THEY CAUSE DISTRACTIONS IN THE CLASSROOM BECAUSE COULD CARE LESS ABOUT LEARNING! They lack the curiousity needed to learn because they have bigger issues at home. THEIR PARENTS SHOULD BE EMBARASSED!
36606029cg said on Friday, Jan 29 at 11:42 AM
no teachers are not baby sitters, but someone got an easy paycheck that day and did not show up to work that day. Someone (teacher) was suppose to be in the room with them ensuring they be punished for whatever action they did to get detention. And I say it is a wake up call to all those parents who always make excuses for their children and start fights in the office when their children get into trouble. This video should prove to them that their children are not angels like they say they are.

Schools have what is called "parental loci", which essentially means the they are the acting parents during the school day. Students are entrusted to schools during the instructional day. I say where was the active monitoring of the teacher who was supposed to be there? This lacking of monitoring clearly falls squarely on the principal.
36610732What's wrong with that?? said on Friday, Jan 29 at 1:39 PM
re always students, having fun is a treasure for teens, why should they paid for the negligence of the school administrators? if you are going topoint the finger the administators are at fault. Detention is unconstitutional. LISD and UISD are run as dictatorships.
36620054BABY Katherine said on Friday, Jan 29 at 1:42 PM
To LISD: the administrators and the nurse that knew what was happening the day before baby Katherine died are suppose to be in detention. not the students.

You dont go to school to mess around. You go to learn. If you want to play go to a playground. These kids are young adults and should act as such. There is a time and place for everything and that definitley was not the time or place for acting like a bunch of monkeys at a zoo. If that was my kid he or she would have their back porch painted red.

Students are being placed in detention for wearing jeans at all three LISD high schools. The principal now at Martin has even sent teachers home for wearing jeans even ag teachers. at a time of low scores, he and LISD should be focusing on instruction and not on jeans. By the way, isn't La Marti in stage 5 AYP sanctions? What so terrible thing did these students do to be removed from the instructional setting? Oh yea, they weren't seen diong drugs, sex nor displaying violence so then what? Jeans

This has been a chaotic performances this fellow students did that day. We as student of Martin High understand that this was wrong, but the other students shouldn't be blame. They should punish those specific students. I comprehend that we need discipline in our school, but should have someone that knows what discipline is and educate us. It's something that is embarrassing for us, too because we are the ones trying to pick this school up. BUt why is it that they always put our SCHOOL first?
36637487why always Martin said on Friday, Jan 29 at 5:36 PM
Why is it that Martin always comes out in the news first when there is other schools that do worst like U.I.S.D, just because they have their way in order for things to be kept as a secret. They just like Martin High to look bad, when there's a lot of good students even in the magnets.
36637614BLAME THE PARENTS said on Friday, Jan 29 at 5:42 PM
While I agree that there was a lack of supervision, it's unfair for anyone to point the finger at the faculty member that was supposed to have been looking over those students simply because we do not know the circumstances. The principle and administrators need to support their teachers by following through with consequences set forth by the school rules. Clearly, ISS is NO consequence to these disrespectful young adults. Hurt their parents where it hurts the most...their wallets, with a FINE!

You invidious ignoramus. I cannot believe that you choose to hold an elementary principal and nurse responsible for the death of a two year old that was not even a student of their campus. The child is dead because of the actions of a young teen male and because of the lack of supervision by the parent and lack of action, such as reporting by relatives, neighbors and previous multiple child protective service visitors. The poor principal became societies scapegoat for others failures.

36685537the real problem said on Saturday, Jan 30 at 3:24 PM
Crimen es juzgar sin razon. Placing students in detention away from a learning environment into a place where no learning is possible is wrong and is, at best, just hiding the problem. The problem won't go away by sticking one's head in the sand. The fact remains that there was no supervision by an adult and no monitoring of the detention (holding cell) by the highly ($109 thouand)paid principal.
36686092Full investigation said on Saturday, Jan 30 at 3:38 PM

In Texas if you know a child is neglected and you remain silent it is a crime. Maybe in Mexico is not, but Laredo is part of Texas not Mexico. Teachers does not have immunity against this law. They must be accountable they are not Royalty or independent dictators They get paid with our own money taxes that is.

I'm sorry, but a lot of you all want to blame everything on the schools and teachers. you parents better look at yourselves before you point fingers. then we have people in here talking about kathrine, that to is her mothers fault. you cannot blame all the school districts for everything. there are some excellet teachers here in Laredo. it's to bad that they have to deal with kids that all they do is disturbe the classes and they end up in detention. displine at the home is were it starts.

This is for "LISD, UISD": I still don't see the connection between the two year child and ANYBODY else besides the mother and the alleged killer. What does the school principal and nurse have to do with her at all? She can't attend their school, she's 2 YEARS OLD! The blame unfortunately always falls on the parent and the alleged attacher/killer....ALWAYS! So stop pointing fingers at the innocent and try to prevent this from happening again by being aware of your surroundings.

LISD and UISD should start disciplining their own teachers, administrators and staff. How many people in those districts had commited criminal offenses?? A lot got away with it. Cruelty against students should not be tolarated and should not be above the Law of Texas and the Law of The United States.

Let’s face it; the main people to blame are the parents. Discipline and respect should be first taught at home, and then enforced in school. A child’s actions and behavior is normally a reflection is of their parents. So unfortunately, this is a perfect example of these children’s upbringing, their living environment, and their parent’s behavior. If you act like a wild a**, so will your children. If are a responsible adult, your children will be responsible as well.
36759532Blame all you want, the parents are the real ones at fault said on Monday, Feb 1 at 10:32 AM
If you run amuck (as per baby Katherine’s so called mother), prepare for the consequences. Yes, the school is partly to blame because there was no supervision in this classroom. But remember, what type of classroom was this, DETENTION. And who goes to DETENTION, children who do not know how to behave. And bottom line, where does their behavior begin? In their home…and who teaches this behavior? The parents…I rest my case.

What type of punishment you ask. How about picking up the trash around the schools. The problem is kids get away with murder because they are given no consequences for their actions. It's time you stop thinking of what you can get from your kid, and ask what you can pass along to your child. If you can't even see what your kid can offer the world, it's time you question yourself as a contributor to this society and as a parent. This in addition to he who oversees that teacher. Student misbehavior is common. Heck even in adults and at times the elderly included. Supervision and the lack of monitoring is the problem that led to this behavior. Ask why the students were sent there in the first place. To suprise most they were sent for dress code violations. Yes wearing jeans. Just plain stupid huh?

Calm down everyone, I watched this video and see three future council members, atleast two city managers, and a possible state representative. In all seriousness, these kids are teen-agers, rebelling against the system. Just like all those hippy, pot smoking, free love, baby boomers that have mortgaged these kids futures. The solution to this is to revise the history of two major generations, boomers and Xers, parents and grandparents. Now convince our children and grand-children that we never did anything wrong, respected authority, and never questioned the establishment. Oh, so sorry, that wasn't us, that was the WWII Generation. Disregard, go ahead and crucify those kids. Hippocrites:)

i dont get surprise of the TV talking about only martin high because all schools have this stupit problems. I think that a 2nd branch of Lara Academy should be created close to the school and i also i think it should be created for every school because every school has this kind of problems and even worse. and for your info. if we could get rid of 15 students--- Martin high would be back to normal.. and i bet you all we would not need an ISS facility.

It is very easy to point the finger at the students, they are only victims of an efficient school system that the majority of the times is focused to bully, to intimidate and to abuse students. as long as the school districts are run by crooked politicians expect more abuse and teachers, administrators and staff geting away with it.

I Thank the students for exposing the inefficiencies and the negligence of that school, The students are the future of this country and we have a duty to expose and to finger all the corruption and the unethical practices of the Government employees, to the students: AGUANTEN VARA ..YOU DID REAL GOOD AND I thank you for having the guts to do it.

They need to change the name of that school, the students do not have to have a school named after a corrupted politician that is a shame to the city of Laredo, This man and his cronnies were an embarrassment to the city of Laredo. thieves, nepotism, abuse of power. just a few.
36928184Pipito Jones said on Wednesday, Feb 3 at 3:48 PM
Boy, Guantanamo takes the cake. The school isn't named after J.C. Martin...It's Raymond and Tirza Martin. Now as for Perez, well there were comments made a while back that the Dr. made a deal to bring him over and Joe would support her no matter what. If that is actually how things work, then what can we expect. Not that he's not a good man, nor that he can do good work, but the whole thing was faulty from the start. There are way too many other instances like this throughout the district. Rios, Theret and Carrera were all brought over by some kind of "agreement" between the board and the new Dr. Que no se hagan los mensos los board memebers, they know what they do. In the process the provide some "outsiders" ,that will not stay in Laredo when all is said and done, with excellent positions, and pay them salaries between $90 and $110 (or more!!!) We have many good people from here that could have those jobs. As for ISS, you could see some good kids in the back acting normal.

The bottom line is that parents are not being parents. They are too busy partying or trying to be their kid's best friend to be a real parent. Then, when something goes wrong, it is always someone else's fault. You decided to have the kid; please "man or woman" up and educate him/her. Please teach your child some manners and common decency. If they don't want to learn at school, then make them get a job. Something. Anything. Just, please, parents, DO YOUR JOB!

First of all, teaching should start at home, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, and DISCIPLINE. Students attend classes without pencil, pen and paper because they don't have money to buy school supplies, yet they have money to buy IPOD's and cell phones; but not all students at MHS are bad students some do attend classes to get a education. For those students it is sad because the ones that want to study are the ones that are affected. The students that are just roaming around, banging on doors, causing problems should be ousted from MHS. Na, that is to easy they are going to wait until something else happens like it did than they start blaming each other. The administration should put their foot down and get rid of all the lost souls (students)that go to school but not attend classes. They don't do it because of the paper work? The school is in STAGE-5 and with all of these distraction it is only going to get worst. Hello Superintendent....

I again challenge KGNS to air additional videos from other schools. There is one from every school all it took was a quick stroll on youtube. Try United High, the teacher was present and did nothing while the student video taped her. The administration at any school does what it can with the resources provided. I suggest that before you slander individuals you get your facts straight, but then again that would take at least the minimum amount of education which is quite clear, by the grammar on these posts, that many of these individuals do not posses

Maybe it will be a good idea for this school to be a charter school. and all wiil be fired and taken over by the state of Texas.

The High school students in Crystal City started the Revolution of he Hispanic voters in the 1970's It was because of this and many more actions of Mexican Americans to be on charge of our own destiny in our American Society. They gave us the power and the will to vote out the political machines that are a cancer to our American Democracy.

Okay this has to be by far the most comments I have seen on a Pro8news blog. Seems like kids messing around in detention gets more attention than people/babies getting killed. The video is nothing to be shocked at. I did far worse in High School, and I went to St. Augustine. This isn't a video like in the national media about kids beating others, or sexting. This video is tame, and shouldn't have gotten all this attention. Sheesh, 100 comments on this?! You people just made these guys heros at their school. Martin isn't all that bad, I've heard horror stories about United, Alexander, and Nixon moreso than Martin.

Thank you for proving my point, what a moron. Please people take the blinders off and open your eyes. The only people that need to be removed is the micro managing Board of Trustees. Both teachers and administration need support this was the only school without a principal at the beginning of the year. A STAGE 5 SCHOOL WITHOUT A PRINCIPAL??? Furthemore they have been short staffed (administration) on and off for years. I strongly suggest that before you point fingers you get your facts straight and find out what is really going on behind the closed doors of the board room meeting, they could give a hoot about Martin High In fact I strongly believe they are preparing it to fail. The school had been failing for years and it isn't until now that they are in stage 5, the final stage, that they are getting support. Seriously??? where was the help before? I'll tell you where it was; the board was too busy trying to hire and fire their next puppet to run the district.
37052799to:open your eyes said on Friday, Feb 5 at 9:58 AM
I'm not blind, I'm realistic, a word you obviously have no concept of. Are you aware how many students are enrolled at MHS? I'll tell you there are about 2000. Two thousand students, five administrators and a principal. Shall I do the math for you as well? The reason the school is failing is because of te students that come back and forth from Mexico every day. These are the same students who can not speak read or write English and refuse to learn. This is why MHS is failing not the teachers or administration. I cared enough as a tax payer and MHS grad to find out why, before you keep flapping your gums I suggest you do the same. Get your facts straight before you make yourself look more like a fool.

Teachers need to be on time and their job and teach. administration need to make themself visible and take the bullby the horns and discpline studentd support teachers over see student behavior etc.....appartently someone has dropped the ball Wake -up people we have a ride to elect our board members, City council members, and Justice of the Peace??? What are the Liendo's doing speaking Of Neptism Students are future of Laredo this should be a community problem Where Judy Zaffarini and Richard Raymond ? Speaking of apathy why? don't people get involved? EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think the Principals are to Blame (mainly) Sorry Blas Bobby and Oscar. When she was in office at the helm she allowed The Zetas enrolled in school and they took over that school with their drug dealings and recruiting etc...... I have yet to see a Hard- working principal take the reins of Martin High. I would Like for the Vice principals also be held accountable for such Failure. STAGE 5 did not get their overnite/ It is always the same thing the Lep students No it's the Special Ed students. How about the students that were born here do not have learning disbility and went to Martin's feeder school and still can/t pass Taks admitit so many such Lazy employees in our Dis

my opinion is all the vice principals should get fired they are no good for nothing...they turn away when you need them the most..and for the counselors they pretend to be there fjor the studnts but in reality thats not the case, they blow you out-they dont care-not unless the student is a GT if not your not important Mrs Moctezuma perfer me to dance on top of the table--then to help me pass the TAKS. Ask Ms Moctezuma how many of us are graduating, its ashame..where the problem its all over..thhis people in Martin high have been ther too too too long they should getfired ,or get retired.Sometimes students only need a love, understanding,a pad on the shoulder or at list for them to give us a smile and for them to look of what we done right and not only the wrong.why cant she look at the good and forget the wrong. we have many beast. we all feel we are nothing because of her. iis sad....

As of now, around 111 comments have been posted by over 25 “bloggers.” This very interesting scenario deserves praising individuals and entities. The individuals that take their time to provide a wide variety of comments; KGNS TV for providing the forum for people to express their opinions. Problem identification appears to be the objective of many blogs. Solutions to this problem (or problems) appear often, too. It’s up to the readers and/or viewers to discern the practical and impractical problems and solutions indicated. It appears that a number of participating bloggers prefer a Martin High School (MHS) as follows: Absence of security personnel, fences, sealed lockers, metal detectors, closed campus, detention, etc. A school with an open campus so that: students may meet in the evening to conduct school-related club business; in the morning (an hour or more before classes start) to prepare for tasks within the curriculum. All this with an acceptable graduation rate. Doable?
