City to Set up Cameras Targeting Illegal Dumping

By KGNS News

If you've been dumping any junk in empty lots, beware. The City of Laredo may soon be catching you red-handed. Recently, the Laredo Environmental Services Department invested thousands of dollars to purchase security surveillance camera equipment and it seems to be doing its job. Our Annette Garcia joins us with more.
"$12,000 dollars in equipment including several cameras have been set up at various sites around town to catch illegal dumping and, according to officials, those cameras have already paid off. City officials are not disclosing the sites where the cameras are set up, only to say that the sites have been constantly filled with unwanted items. We drove around town and found several examples of what the city's talking about; everything from mattresses to couches, scattered only feet away from Laredo homes. Officials tell us multiple individuals have been caught on camera illegally dumping branches around town. One person has been fined 500 dollars, and another case is pending to go to court. That person faces a fine of up to $2000 dollars. A City of Laredo Environmental Investigator says what's ironic is that people can dump their branches at the city's landfill for free, and the solid waste department even picks up some of the items. The City of Laredo says this should be a warning for anyone who is dumping trash illegally. The Environmental Services Department hopes to catch more violators, but also hopes the cameras will deter people from dumping in the first place. Back to you."

Lets catch all these people and punish them accordingly. That means even the Big fish not just the small ones!

One question, WHO is monitoring the camera's? Are they monitored 24/7 like they should be? What is the point of cameras if no one is watching them?
