Hundreds of gallons of precious water have been pouring down the drain for weeks. That’s according to central Laredo residents who say it's a sight they're tired of seeing. Not wanting to be identified, one man who works on Tilden street says it has been going on too long. He says the water has been continuously running. A few days ago, we caught it all on camera draining out of a fire hydrant right onto the street and down the drain. A few days later, an extension has been added to the original hose, hiding the water but not the problem. Assistant Director of Water Utilities, Carl Schwing, says it's all part of the process of making improvements throughout the City, that includes replacing old 20-inch pipes that break regularly. Twenty-two, 500 foot sections of pipeline are being replaced, each containing 8-thousand gallons of water. The process takes multiple hours. As a result he says the draining won't stop anytime soon. Schwing says it may take several weeks before the water at that fire hydrant can be turned off. That's if everything goes well. He says if any segment fails a test or if old valves don't hold, they have to re-test those pipes, meaning even more weeks of wasted water.
