Congressman Henry Cuellar hosted a joint hearing with the Chairman of Foreign Affairs in Washington today to discuss the next steps for the ‘Merida Initiative’. Several witnesses invited to attend gave their take on what exactly is happening on the border. Officials from the Department of State, Department of Homeland Security, CBP, and ICE all testified before the joint committee meeting this morning, as part of discussions about the next steps of the Merida Initiative. Years after implementing that initiative, problems across the border continue. Congressman Cuellar says there was talk of beefing up law enforcement on the US side of the border, and cited the recent deployment of National Guard to the border. He says Mexico is at the same point Colombia was in, in the 90's and has many more years to go before the problem gets solved. There was a lot of participation and eagerness at today's meeting to do something about the violence, according to Cuellar. He says Mexican President Felipe Calderon's recent visit seemed to have a lot to do with that enthusiasm.
