Accused metal thief arrested

By KGNS News

Police finally catch a man who they say went on a stealing spree, taking manhole covers, and storm grates from around town.

Police arrested Alfredo Gutierrez, III for allegedly stealing dozens of items, including manhole covers and storm grates.

Authorities set up surveillance cameras at local recycling centers and ended up catching Gutierrez at Wilkinson Iron and Metal.

Police say he had nine metal grates that weigh anywhere from 50-100 pounds and each is worth around $300.

He also allegedly had 4 water meter tops valued at $100 a piece.

Over the past two days the city of Laredo has reported 20 missing water meter covers and the police hope they have found their thief.

Police estimate the total worth of the metal when recycled is close to $2,300.
