Laredo pet owners listen up! There are new and very detailed updates to the City pet ordinance that could eventually add up to a fine if not followed.
It involves the micro-chipping of pets and Health Department officials say it's well overdue. The goal is to ensure animal safety as well as tracking Laredo pets. One of the biggest changes: a new registration process requiring that all pets be micro-chipped. "The local vets have partnered with the city, and for the first year it will only cost $5 dollars. The vets will then share the information again to enter into a database to track who's got pets, and if they're vaccinated and who they belong to," says Dr. Hector Gonzalez of the Laredo Health Department.
The ordinance went into effect May 1st, but Health Department officials say they want to roll out the new rules slowly to give people a chance to catch up.

More proof of government intrusion. City council, mayor, city manager, you all know what you can do with your microchips!

If you are talking about "hidden expenses" as being rabies vacinations that is something that is mandatory by the city. If you are a responsible pet owner and all vacinations are up to date there should not be any problems.

how many vets are under this program cause not all vets are going to put in a chip for 5 dollars unless we ( tax payer ) is going to pay them the full balance due - 5 dollars. hiden cost at our expense.

Some people have pickles for brains and worse they try to pickle the taxpayers in ways that will help them meet their hidden agendas.

In my opinion just like athorities can't force or compell any citizen to udergo any evaisive procedures, and since most or all pets are considered part of the families nowadays shoulden't this decission be left up to the owners.Unless the city is trying to make up the 16million they'r short.I say audit the h#ll out of them!!!!!

MICRO CHIPS HAVE INDEED SHOWN TO SOMETIMES BE HARMFUL TO PETS. I AGREE I KEEP MY PETS IN KENNELS AND A FENCE SURROUND. IF MY PET IS CAUGHT RUNNING LOSE THAN TICKET ME; OTHER WISE LEAVE MY PET ALONE.

I knew it. Reported last night was our trip happy manager advising council of a sixteen and a half MILLION dollar deficit for next year. That compadre reads 16K or better yet $16,000,000. Just where can we get someone of the likes of the late great Aldo Tatangelo these days?

maybe its time to release ALL pets onto the streets. many people can not afford this. its another way vets and city officials can make extra traveling money without the notice of tax payers. elections are coming and we all need to vote these fools out of office

Laredo needs to really address the REAL issues!! Street repairs, Light repairs, street signs...c'mon Photo-op mayor needs to stop playing around with the office of Mayor, I wonder if he's related to ex-president, it's funny San Antonio, Houston or even Austin have that problem...but a city with less then 100k population has overpopulation pet problems??!! They need to revise the ordinance that after March 01, 2010 All pets need to be micro chipped, pets that were either purchased or given as a gift. the ones prior to that everyone else is exempt! Kinda like a "Grandfather Clause", but then again Laredo officials always railroad down ideas citizens have! Why doesn't Laredo Tag released sex offenders?? Criminals??? real threats! Published in veterinary and toxicology journals between 1996 and 2006, the studies found that lab mice and rats injected with microchips sometimes developed subcutaneous "sarcomas" - malignant tumors, most of them encasing the implants. ummm i think twice!

Tell you what. I have an 8 foot high cinder block wall all around my house with gates to match and ontop of that my dogs are kept in kennels. I'll be d@med if Im letting those fools tell me what to do with my pets. they should deal with more important issuses rather than sticking it to the tax payers.

Another tax where pet owners will be left holding the bag. What is this money going to be used for? That is the news people should be told.
