New ordinance to require pets be microchipped

By KGNS News

It's no secret pet overpopulation is a problem here in Laredo, and now with the new City ordinance making it a requirement to microchip all of your pets, health officials hope Laredoans will comply.

Beginning next month, every pet owner must make sure their cats and dogs are registered through a microchip.

Lori Brizius, the Animal Shelter Director, says:

“If it's registered and you lose your dog in Oklahoma, and you're on your way to Michigan, and a shelter finds it, they'll scan it and they will still be able to find you.”

Once microchipped, the pet and pet owners’ information is placed in a database. Not only will the microchip help reunite pet owners with their furry animals, its main goal: to ensure animal and human safety by making sure the pet has been vaccinated for rabies.

And for those who choose not to microchip their pets, health officials say they could face a $100 fine.

Armando Ramirez, a Northside resident, says this about the added expense:

“It’s an expense for individuals that maybe have 1,2,3 pets in their home and that could be a little costly for people with fixed incomes.”

In an effort to make sure all pets are microchipped, beginning the first week of July, the Animal Shelter, Health Department and participating veterinarians and pet stores will only be charging $5 to have your pet microchipped.

The ordinance goes into effect in July, but there is a one-year grace period, meaning citations will not be given out until August of 2011.

If the chips cause cancer/tumors, then this wouldn't be a good ordinance. If, scientifically, we know that these chips don't do this, then it is a good ordinance. Until then, I think people have a right to be upset. The issue isn't the 5 dollar charge, but the lack of scientific evidence and the proliferation of many small laws that slowly erode our "freedoms".

So fear is upon them only because they are not doing what they are suppose to as a pet owner. And those who complain about $5.00, C'mon you spend more on a 6pk of beer. IF this does not make sense to some please learn the English language!

There are alot of idiots on this blog, when in fact having a microchip implanted on a pet is a GREAT idea and for $5.00 it is worth it. The current cost is $60.00 at the vets so if people complain I assume they dont even provide adequate medical treatments such as the basic RABIES vaccinations.

tag them first said on Wednesday, Jun 9 at 7:30 AM

Ok so if you happen to live just outside Laredo do you too have to tag your pet? I think we need to tag our council and Mr. Potato head along with our manager to keep track of them when they go on their junkets to central and south America and to Washington.

If you choose to keep pets, then you are responsible for keeping them safe and healthy. If you can't afford $5, then how can you afford food and basic care for them? This ordinance just makes owners do what they should be doing anyway.
