Vandalism at Seven Flags Park

By KGNS News

As summertime hits Laredo, kids young and old are looking to hit the parks and enjoy the playgrounds and splash parks. Some park goers have called the station and complained about the state of some parks including Seven Flags park.

Councilwoman Cindy Liendo is concerned, "We have tried to make the improvements; however the community itself is not taking care of it, so as soon as something new goes up, it gets vandalized and must be brought down."

The City had just installed a $3,000 shade over one of the playgrounds at Seven Flags and promptly had it torn. The shade not only protects the kids from the sun but also protects the play equipment. Without the shade, the slides get warped and must then be changed out and that means more money coming from the city.

Parks and Leisure PIO Edward Millan explains, "The economic situation has hit every department. Budget cuts, also when we have these unexpected vandalisms, things have to slow up and we have to raise that money some how, some way."

Another main contention for the City is the bathrooms at these parks and the easy target they have become. They have tried to remove the graffiti and repair the fixtures but it seems to be a losing battle.

"We had them fixed and within days they were vandalized again."

The City is making an effort to watch the parks and catch those destroying the property.

"We have surveillance going on right now in the park; however the details are confidential. But it is being watched, so I would caution anyone who is doing this vandalism to beware because they are going to be caught."
