Handicapped commuter wants bench at bus stop
With temperatures soaring over the century mark, those waiting at El Metro stops are doing their best to escape the heat.
One man says he's been asking for help for months, but rather than waiting for El Metro to build a shelter and a bench, he has taken action.
Fernando Renteria has been riding on the Laredo transit system for over 15 years.
Waiting for the bus each day has become a strain.
A motorcycle accident in the early 90's changed Renteria's life forever; with a prosthetic leg Renteria says he was in pain standing for long periods of time before getting on a bus.
Made up of items lying around the house, Renteria's homemade bench does the trick for now.
He has anchored it to a nearby tree for shade and stability, while using a cinder block as a counter balance.
But he says as a taxpayer he deserves better.
Conflicts between Renteria and El Metro in the past have held up the process, but after contacting El Metro they say they are willing to overlook previous disagreements to help Renteria as long as the Chestnut and New York stop matches criteria for a bench.
If there is a bus stop in your area that you feel needs a bench, or shelter from the sun, you are asked to make your request to El Metro customer service at phone number 795-2280.
