No Burn or Fireworks Ban

By KGNS News

Commissioners were looking at implementing a burn and fireworks ban, but the drought index put out by the Texas Forestry Service is not high enough.

At this point Webb County is at three hundred and in order to implement the ban it should be higher than five hundred.

Executive Administrator, Leroy Medford, says “That index will reflect the amount of drought the county is experiencing at a particular time. They monitor and regulates that.”

The same situation happened last year, when the County restricted certain fireworks.

This time there is not even a restriction at all and that has the Laredo Fire Department worried.

Anabel Venegas with the Laredo Fire Department says, “The few fires that we do have is because kids take the fireworks inside and with the lighter on so fires occur inside the home.”

Fire Department says they've already had numerous grass fires and this will just add to it.

Regardless of the fact people want to have fun on 4th of July, they should be responsible at all times.

“People should be considerate even if they are doing a cook out. Just be considerate and take safety precautions.”

The County will look to renew the burn ban again, at a later date.

There is a law against jaywalking as well, but it isn't enforced either. Come to think of it, there is a law against sodomy as well, and we all know THAT goes on!

Why bother having a law that states shooting off fireworks in the city limit is illegal?Violators are rarely confronted or fined. Police don't even respond to calls about fireworks within the city although they really don't have to receive calls. Many streets have several obvious voilators that can be seen by just driving around. The statement: "Regardless of the fact people want to have fun on 4th of July, they should be responsible at all times" seems to mean that if you are going to break the law, just try to be more careful and don't let any fires start. -I guess when it comes down to it, the ban on fireworks within the city limits is really a suggestion only.
