Residents living in one north Laredo subdivision said they're fed up with the constant drag racing in their neighborhood.
A mother of two who didn't want to be identified said every Sunday cars could be seen and heard zooming past her house near Country Club Drive.
“They're pushing 60, 70, 80 miles an hour on Del Mar maybe even more. I fear for my children and for my life because these people are not law abiding,” said the north Laredo resident.
The Laredo police department said they're aware of drag racing taking place in her neighborhood.
“They sometimes say they send out patrol cars, but on Wednesday night when it was really bad I called and the racing lasted over an hour. I don't think anyone ever came to address the situation,” the mother of two said.
Street racing in that area isn't the only problem residents have to deal with. They said a car wash in the area usually gets filled with dozens of cars on Sundays and Wednesdays.
“And they're the loud cars,” the mother added. “The ones that make a lot of noise.”
Police told Pro 8 News they often patrol the area; however they will be looking into this problem.
“I hope it doesn't take a death for them to finally address this drag racing situation.”
Gene Belmares, the City representative in charge of the district where the problem is being reported said he will also be taking a look at the issue. He urges his constituents to call 311 to report the proble.

Maybe if they were to open up the track and how its closed because the city refuses to fund it instead of making a story of a hobby that people do here in Laredo to make the city more interesting.....i see no racing on del-mar this chick must not no anything and i bet she's driven drunk more than once.....but oh well.........

The idea of street racing on del mar is completly ubsurde and on racing on country club is just plain brain damaged. We go and hang out at the car wash and rarely have our radios on, and much less full blast. Occasionly a couple of cars that are not from our group will coming in blasting radios and acting as fools, but thats when we leave the area.Laredo Performance does not condone any street racing .Also like a previous person said, if the city of laredo would get off their asses and actully fund the old county line dragstrip it would not only keep any potental street racers away from driving wreckless on the streets, but it would create jobs for the people that would need to run the track as well as a good some revenue. Lp will aslo not allow any new memberships at the moment.

to begin with those races they showed in the videos obviously wasn't del mar or country club dr. there is never racing done there, yes hangout & chill but thats it... most of the cars r extremely loud and just by taking off moderately is not racing its the loudness that makes this lady assume they're racing. EL RELAJE ur all hater & loser cause u don't have a ride like that.. hahahaha!!

Some research on this woman's claims would be nice. Has she really called? At what time? Does she give ANY information? Other than "those people racing". Could it possibly be that the officers were not sent instantly because they were ON OTHER MORE IMPORTANT CALLS? Such as these people arguing with their 12 yr old and calling the police?

This is a joke a few loud cars go by and all of a sudden its "racing" and "60 to 80 mph" hasnt anyone been on the street and heard the cars some of them sound fast and like theyre speeding when theyre not. The only reason why this story was done is because nothing better happened in Laredo and Its close to the Country Club where people have money and are used to having things theyre way and the world aint theyre Burger King so if the city wants to stop or lessen the racing on the streets reopen the track.

this lady is redicules how do u race on delmar doing 60-80 mpf like others have said that is brain damage and ridicules or the contry club cmon no one even goes threw there..... one assumes a person is racing cuase they here loud cars loud mufflers music bumping but that is just cimply not that case...the reason y cops take so long to get there is because this car scene has been going on for as long as i can remember hanging out at different location the police already no there is no drag racing going on its just a group of people that share the same love and passion for cars that one has instead of being into crime and drugs...or would u rather shut the scence completly down and not have anything for these kids to do..but drugs and crime and when they break into ur house then it would really give u a r eason to call the cops and complain cuz kids have nothing better to do...i think there is just a bunch of hating going on here

The racing is on the loop heading northward. And, I have been on Del Mar when excessive speeding took place. Around 9-10 pm. It was frightening and nauseating.

pro8news should investigate who is the the new owner of the old track by us83 and try to see what is the process on it. I think the media has the means to find out and talk to them. If our local track would re-open it would most deff help relief this problem.

What kind of an excuse is it for juveniles with expensive (parent-purchased) rice burners to dwell on this idea that the city should even CONSIDER funding a cent for a lame race track?? Almost all of the comments made here are rediculously immature and ill representing of auto enthusiasts and LaredoPerformance.com alike. The events described by this woman are blown out of proportion and saturated with media influenced hysteria. A group of people who enjoy automobiles and hanging out together should not be harassed or categorized as criminals because there are a choice few that cannot function as adults. The car scene in Laredo has always been a big part of the culture and will continue to be. I am dissappointed by this story and wish they would have at the very least obtained some credible information aside from a few youtube videos. Honestly, Pro 8 news is the number one news source in Laredo and they are using the reporting methods of a high school student doing a power point presentation. No he died as a passenger of a Nissan 350Z driven by a friend of his. The driver's parents were part owners of the "Las Cananas" night club and have been giving their son fast cars even though he had already totaled one. He was an accident that was waiting to happen. Mercurio was just an unlucky passenger in that car wreck.
