You may have noticed plenty of construction workers out on the roads of Laredo these past few weeks. That's because Tx-Dot crews have been wrapping up major projects and moviing quickly on new ones. One major overpass is complete, and another is nearing completion. Our Annette Garcia has the details of what drivers can expect in the near future.
"It's a sound most Laredo drivers don't want to hear. But soon, the waiting and waiting...and waiting...won't be necessary on Guadalupe or Chihuahua streets as Tx-Dot puts their overpass project on overdrive. 'Ultimately, once the street is built you're going to have two directions: Guadalupe and Chihuahua,' says Raul Leal, from Tx-Dot. 'In addition, you will also have a pedestrian bridge that goes side by side with the overpass,' says Leal. The over 11 million dollar project--not including the cost of the property--has been years in the making. Over 2 years ago, the state bought out rows of homes and businesses and demolished them. Then everything came to a standstlll. But finally, Tx-Dot officials say relief is on its way. Equipment and materials are aready on site. A total of 300 tractor trailer truckloads of dirt will be hauled in to level the area. The project is similar to the Mines Road overpass recently opened to alleviate that troubled train spot. 'Be careful. Everyone's going to have the new experience of getting on the road, but once we get used to it, it should be a no brainer," says Leal. Planing for that overpass began back in 2000. Tx-Dot officials hope to have the new Guadalupe overpass finished by the end of 2011. 'It's good growth for the city, and we're just glad it's here.' Annette Garcia, Pro 8 News."

It was about time. I don't know what our city leaders have against over passes and under passes? These type of over passes should have been build thirty years ago. Nevertheless, good to see the progress. Not too mention that we are talking about US 83 for christs sakes and not just a basic local road way.

It's great. I just hope the people of Laredo don't realize that Guadalupe & Chihuahua Streets are not expressways. As it is that what it feels like every morning.
