Accused hitman's trial reveals details of Zeta inner workings

By KGNS News

Prosecutors have begun their second attempt to convict an alleged member of a Mexican drug cartel hit squad on drug and weapons charges.

The trial of Gerardo Castillo Chavez began Wednesday in the border city of Laredo. Testimony and court documents tell a story of gunmen moving between Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and Laredo with a list of targets during a period of about a year in 2005 and 2006.

Castillo is the first of 34 defendants in the case to go on trial.

Prosecutors say he was part of a drug-trafficking conspiracy run by the Gulf cartel and its enforcement arm at the time, the Zetas.

His 2010 trial ended with a deadlocked jury.
