On November 21st Maria Garza made a phone call to the Attorney General's office with some questions on her case, and she was told the father of her child was dead. This happened after the office of the Attorney General's computer system generated a false deseased person report. After hearing this, she called her eleven-year old daugher and told her the news. Maria Garza called some relatives and looked for an obituary on-line, but found nothing to prove what she was told at the office of the Attorney General. The next day, she decided to call back and spoke to another representative at that office. Austin representatives did not speak to our cameras but did say that a mistaken report was generated by the computer, that the representative should have verified first with other agencies before breaking the news over the phone and that both the representative and supervisor are being counseled on the case.
