City Strategic Planning Workshop

By KGNS News

Members of city council are preparing for a meeting this saturday, where they plan to discuss some issues they've wanted to for close to a year.
With the packed agendas for their meetings, they aren't always able to get to everything they want to.
"A lot of economic issues that we need to focus on to develop...opportunities for investment here to create jobs is our number one focus."
The list of topics city council will discuss from a variety of things. Garza says each city councilman has brought issues to the table they feel are important. Of those items they will then prioritize them. Something that is important is a possible overpass on Clark and Loop 20.
"The overpass on Clark blvd...that's probably going to be a priority because it helps mobility. It helps commerce."
Another idea that will be discussed is shopping.
Garza says city council members also want to discuss the possibility of constructing multiple new shopping malls.
"We had town center...the outlet mall on mile marker 18...old river mall and a high rise on 35. So at one time we had four centers that were interested in constructing here in Laredo."
But due to the negative economy, those plans were halted. Something that was a very controversial decision, the town center near the airport. Although people protested, Garza says it's ready to go.
"So we need to figure out what we need to do to convince them to construct."
He feels that having these attractions might keep people from traveling to other cities.
"Yes we want to focus on serving our community here, but we also want to attract people from the outside to come here."

How about discussing Historical Preservation for our city. Why aren't we doing enough on preserving what we have.
