City steps in to help hit-and-run victim

By KGNS News

The City of Laredo has stepped in to help a man who was severely injured in a hit-and-run accident.

City officials say Laredo Health Department doctors and nurses are now monitoring the condition of Gustavo Sanchez. He suffered massive lacerations to his head and major scrapes to his body after being hit and dragged by a vehicle on New Years' Eve.

Officials tell us Sanchez has received antibiotics from the Health Department and will be headed to San Antonio for another appointment very soon.

MEDICAL CARE HAS BECOME A BUSINESS FOR PROFIT. IF THEY CAN'T PROFIT FROM YOU, THEN YOU DIE. AS COLD AS IT SOUNDS, THAT IS THE TRUTH. YOU HAVE TO HAVE 3 KIDS OR MORE AND EARN VERY LITTLE TO QUALIFY FOR ALL THE FREE SERVICES. BELIEVE ME I WORKED WITH PEOPLE WHO WORK AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE SO THEY WON'T LOOSE THEIR BENIFITS. FOODS STAMPS, RENT ASSISTANCE, MEDICAID. THEY REST OF THEIR MONEY THEY EARNED UNDER THE TABLE. THEY HAVE JUST FIGURED HOW TO BEAT THE SYSTEM. BUT IF YOUR AN HONEST PERSON YOU DIE BECAUSE YOU WONT GET ANY HELP; BECAUSE YOU ARE EARNING A NONEST LIVING. LAREDO SALARIES LEAVE A LOT TO BE DESIRE.

DISAPPOINTED WITH OUR HEALTH SYSTEM said on Tuesday, Jan 18 at 8:31 PM

HE HAD TO HAVE BEEN WORKING NOT TO QUALIFY FOR ANYTHING. TRUST ME I LOST MY JOB OF 25 YEARS WHEN MY FORMER EMPLOYER DIE. I LOST ALL MY HEALTH BENIFITS. THE JOB THAT I WAS ABLE TO FIND DIDN'T PROVIDE ANY BENIFITS. IN THE MEAN TIME I DEVELOP SOME 2 TUMORS. I NEEDED MEDICAL ATTENTION WHICH I COULD AFFORD. THE GATEWAY CLNIC TOLD ME THAT I DIDN'T QUALIFY BECAUSE OF MY INCOME. I WAS HARDLY MAKING ENDS MEET. BUT STILL I CONSIDER TO BE MAKING TOO MUCH MONEY. IT TOOK ME 5 YRS UNTIL WAS ABLE TO GET A JOB THAT PROVIDED HEALTH BENIFITS. AND THAN AGAIN I HAD TO COME UP WITH THE DEDUCTABLE BEFORE I WAS TREATED.

I remember being chased by three kids holding bats in Regency Park when I was little, I was screaming at the top of my lungs, no one helped, no one came out of their homes to see what was happening.. THAT is human nature for you, and I LEARNED that lesson too well, no one cares. So, I stopped caring too.. "if you can't beat them, join them."

It is relevant to me if he had/has a job or not. Maybe if he was/is a hard working man with a family to feed, I would feel a bit more diferently. I want to know what he has contributed to society for him to deserve free services that is being paid by my taxes.Yes it was probably a drunk who ran him over, and I hope this person gets caught. But, what the hell was he doing at those hours of the night on the street? He was probably drinking too. .

i think what these people are upset about is that he is being treated for free by the tax payers of Laredo. that is the problem. i myself do not like it. who decided that? what happenes if we line up everyone for that? how are we as tax payers going to pay for all that? i am sorry for what happened to the man, and i do have compassion, but we as tax payers cannot flip the bill for this. it is wrong. i feel bad for the man, but as i said, the city is 100% wrong on this. they are going to open a flood gate. it tell you what, now i am going to line up at the city door to and see if i can get my medical bills payed for 100% by the city, and everyone else should too and see what the city fathers are going to do. it's not about right or wrong, it's about being fair to all tax payers.

The problem also lies in that no one wants to get involved, as far as reporting.Three years ago in November 2007 my brother in-law was hit and killed during rush hour on the Zapata hwy by a hit-n-run driver. To this day no one has been arrested and no witnesess have come foward.I mean theese are people not animals.Wheres the humanity?

What is WRONG with you people? MY God, Did you look at his injuries? It's irrelevant if he has a job! He was run over -- and dragged. WTH is wrong with the person that did that? Probably a DRUNK. Compassion? Do you all that are posting these comments even know what it is?

Unlike some people I dont like to take advantage of people, especially if they were trying to help me. By the way no where in the story did I hear he couldnt go back to work because of his injuries? Did he have a job?

NO if the tables were turned I would return all that money to the people who donated it. Its only fair since they were giving me free services.

Yeah, and what's gonna happen to all that money that was donated to the bank account that was set up by his family for this man? I mean the city is paying for everthing right?

More taxpayer money being used "wisely". Wonder if I can go by and pick up some medicine too.
