Tonight opened up the 2012 long awaited celebration of the WBCA with the Commander's Reception.
Our Lauren Kendrick was in the midst of the excitement and joins us now.
"Thanks Tim. We're here at the 115th WBCA Commander's Reception at the LEA. Music, food and fun were all a part of tonight's festivities that kick off Laredo's biggest party."
When it comes to the woman portraying Martha Washington this year, Anita Averill says she is very honored because it's something dear to her heart.
"It's a family legacy. Both of my grandmas were charter members of the society back in the 1900's"
Her husband also had his turn at being royalty.
"He was George Washington last year so it's fun. You get to dress up like a princess."
Of the questions Averill gets asked, many want to know just how heavy the dress is.
"Underneath the dress you have support and a cage so i haven't felt it yet."
As for the man who was named the 115th George Washinton, this is something Oscar Moreno was shocked to find out.
"It was a big surprise for me. Just never expected it really."
Moreno says he remembers as a child watching all of the WBCA events.
"Not in a million years, I've been watching this since I was old enough to remember."
The president of the WBCA says this celebration brings in 600,000 people which greatly helps the community.
"It generates about $14 million to the local economy. So it's just a large party, but also improving the quality of life and economic impact."
Palacios says with those more than 600,000 attendants, the Laredo WBCA is the largest Washington celebration in the nation.
"Even in Washington D.C, where Washington is from, in Mount Vernon, we have a bigger celebration, so we're excited about that."
"This year there will be 27 events celebrating Washington's birthday. I'll go ahead and send it back to you in the station Tim. Reporting from the LEA, Lauren Kendrick Pro 8 News."
