A complaint has been filed with the Texas Ethics Commission against a candidate running for District Judge in Laredo.
It alleges the candidate received a contribution well over the allowed amount.
But he says he did nothing wrong.
According to the complaint filed by Hector Farias Jr, he feels Fernando Sanchez who is running for 341st District Judge should not be allowed to do so...all because of an unlawful contribution in the amount of $50,000.
"A candidate cannot receive more than $2,500 from an individual. In this case it was close to $50,000 so it was way in excess of what he should have received."
In fact, Farias says according to attorneys he spoke with at the Texas Ethics Commission in Austin where the complaint was filed, if guilty, Sanchez could face fines near $300,000.
"Mr. Sanchez either willfully violated the law for which reason he should not be running and should be removed or he did it out of ignorance."
We contacted Fernando Sanchez and were able to get a statement over the phone...
Sanchez says, “The $50,000 is not a contribution. It was a loan from my step mother Severita Sanchez. The Texas Ethics Commission campaign finance guide for judicial candidates allows it. It's perfectly fine. I researched the law before accepting the loan."

This is the height of hypocrisy. Mr. Sanchez has spent this campaign in the courts attacking one candidate. Now he will have to spend the rest of it defending himself. Rufino for judge!
