Last year hundreds of people turned out for the first ever Rio Fest , which featured kayakers racing to the finish line. But this year flooding washed away the festival which was canceled due to some of the destruction high water left behind, but it didn't keep celebrations from going on anyways. This morning over 300 people joined together to give back to mother earth. They mulched over trails and cleaned areas near the LCC Environmental Science Center. All at the same time kayak races were being held on the river . The winners got cash prizes which will go to the charity of their choice.
Victor Garcia took second prize in the race. He says, "I'm just happy to be here representing and also to be doing what I love doing which is kayaking for a great cause and enjoying the river which is fantastic. I hope everyone else can come and check it out. It's great."
Free kayaking was provided for trail volunteers. This year organizers were able to garner big support from big sponsors like I and F distributors , Sames, and Academy. This was the 16th year of the Dia Del Rio Celebra.
