It's a case no animal lover ever expects. An owner finds her dog with severe trauma, including one of its ears ripped off. Pro 8 News reporter Brenda Medina spoke with the pet's owner and the veterinarian who treated the innocent dog.
The fury little dog endured great pain and was just released from the veterinarian's. Tuesday night its family and authorities are hoping you can help track down the person or people responsible.
"This looks to me like somebody took a pair of scissors or a knife and just sliced the ear right off,” said Dr. Sandra Leyendecker from Critter Care veterinary clinic.
It's a painful amputation putting a 3-year-old terrier through severe pain and anguish.
"It's like cutting off a finger or part of your own ear. It's quite painful,” Leyendecker added.
Dr. Leyendecker cared for Chocolate all week placing him under supervision, antibiotics and pain medicine. "We just sutured what was left of the skin to the inner ear just to kind of keep it closed."
Chocolate was finally released Tuesday, but the whole cruel incident happened this past weekend in northwest Laredo in the Mescalero and Riverbank Drive neighborhood. His owner who preferred to not show her face on camera recounts the unfortunate incident. "Sunday morning the pets ran out. I was able to bring in two of my pets but there was one missing which was Chocolate,” the pet owner said. “Since it was pretty dark, I wasn't able to see him."
A few hours later she heard scratching on the door and a dog crying. "I felt this very intense eerie feeling. I had never seen such cruelty done. I was frightened."
Not only did she find him bloody and missing an ear, "He had this metal wire hanging from his butt,” she described. “Attached to the metal wire was a beer can."
The way they placed it is shocking and unbelievable.
"The wire was wrapped around the tail to hold it in place and then inserted rectally in to the anus about 4 inches or so,” Dr. Leyendecker explained. “So when the dog would run it would continually irritate and poke the poor dog."
"First I took it as a personal shock but then I figured it must have been someone that was drunk or under the influence,” said the pet owner.
Wagging his tail once again and surrounded by his other four-legged friends, Choco's owner is hoping those responsible will be caught. "I want people to know that there's cruel persons out there that harm animals and if the person is found I would want them to go and face the full force of the law. This was really unnecessary cruelty done to such a sweet pet."
"I feel sorry for people that do these kinds of things, shame on them,” Leyendecker added.
If you may have seen, heard something this past weekend or know who's responsible for this severe case of animal cruelty, you're urged to call Crimestoppers at 727-TIPS or 727-8477.
All calls will remain anonymous and if your information leads to an arrest you may be eligible for a reward of up $1,000.

If I ever get the pleasure of having the perpetrators of this incident or any other person who tortures animals, let it be know there is someone in Laredo willing to defend our pets. I hope this person reads it and to whoever has a deamining comment to this well yes I am sick... sick of people hurting defensless beings in order to feel powerful and macho to fulfill their void.

Some of these comments blow my mind. I have 2 dogs and sometimes they manage to bolt out of the door. This is what happened and the owner tried to find the dog. Thank god I live in a neighborhood that isn't filled with crazies because if I ever caught anyone doing this, there won't need to be a call made to police.

You are right this can happen to anyone but c'mon parents are also treated as criminals when their kids run out the house without their knowledge nor approval. How is this pups owner different.

Yanno CG, dogs are FOOD. In China they bake them in barrels along with cats.. they maynot be the most tastey treats in the world, but its always SOMETHING, right? Dogs are pets.. so a Cow or a Pig cannot be a pet? Can I breed a human for food?

owner responsibility?I dont think it was the owners fault,,everybody whos had pets know that they are times that they run out the house,,or maybe they escaped ,,,dont blame the owner, this can happen to anyone,

Cg, I don't think anyone on this blog thinks the pup deserved this. However, you miss the point that the owner needs to own up to his/her negligence.

And anon, I just hope your not walking down the street where these idiots live and hope to God they dont do to you what they did to this poor animal. Maybe that might change your mentality. Or maybe you know who did it? Who knows?

Anon, now your just being ridiculous. Those animals are killed for food not for fun ok. So you cannot compare these two very different situations. Those animals are not pets, they are breed and killed for one reason for food and whatever other resouces they can use from them. I dont know about circus animals you must have watched that movie "Water for Elephants" or something. I stil cannot understand how you can contradict yourself first you say the animal deserved it because the owner was not supervising it and now you want to preach to me about animal cruelty. Which is it, pick a side.

Please watch "Earthlings". Cows, Pigs, Chickens, Foxes, etc get FAR FAR worse treatment in slaughter houses.. even BEFORE they get slaughtered. Circus animals get beaten and abused/neglected. Yet its okay to do that to THOSE animals right?

Yes I am assuming they are males but it could have been a female so in that case I would cut off one of her private organs if that makes you feel better. What if it were lets say a child or to be fair lets say it was a grown person walking at night for exercise or something would you say it was their fault. Would you still have the same opinion. No one, no child no animal no adult should have to go through that.

Cg your assuming they were males. The responsibility lies with the owner. Doesn't Laredo have leash laws? Oh, ok I see, another unenforced ordinance. This poor pup could have been spared this barbaric treatment if the owner had "known" better than to allow their dog to run free.

I think the crime far out weighs the dog owners responsibility no? This poor animal did not deserve what they did to him supervised or not. I would like to know who the idiots that did this are and I would like to give them a taste of their own torture techniques, but instead of cutting off their ear I would cut off their d**k.

Whoever did this deserves to have his ear cut off and a wire shoved up his rectum. There are a lot of sickos out there, so keep an eye on your pets and your children. Where are the vigilantes when you need them?
