The community comes together to help a single mother of four who recently lost her home in a fire and Wednesday she received a big surprise.
Last week Elizabeth Salinas and her four little ones were left without a roof over their heads as a fire devoured all of their possessions.
"We were starting with zero and now we have a lot,” Salinas said.
Salinas is slowly getting back on her feet thanks to the overwhelming support from the community. "I'm blessed, I'm very blessed. i never thought a lot of people would help."
Bags piled up as two of her children went through their new belongings. They received a number of items from clothing and even toys lighting up the two-year-old's little face. "People call me and they say it's used clothes, I tell them 'I don't mind if it's used clothes the kids need it,” Salinas added. “The kids are going to use everything."
The biggest surprise for Salinas came this week when one Laredoan decided to pay it forward.
"I saw this story on the Salinas family and I was really moved by that, I was touched by that,” said Laredoan Oscar Vasquez.
So moved that Vasquez decided to donate a home.
"We've been blessed by so many people and now it's time to give back,” said Vasquez.
As Salinas held back tears she told Pro 8 News she's anxious to giver her children the good news.
"They're going to be very happy with the news that I'm going to give them today because they still don't know."
But there's one obstacle, the house currently sits on Oscar's property.
"If the community can help me now to try and move the house,” Salinas pleaded. “If they know of anybody that can try to help me move the house or if they know of anyone selling a lot at a good offer for them to call me."
"City, community, county leaders pull together for this family,” Vasquez added.
Though a very sturdy home they're also looking to make some repairs inside and out. "You know we may live on different parts of the city but together we are one family."
One city coming together during this family's unfortunate tragedy.
If anyone is willing to lend a helping hand to repair the home as they get it back up to living conditions or can help move the home to another lot please contact Elizabeth at 744-3129 or Oscar at 1-956-802-8811.
