The Laredo Fire Department has been awarded a $3.9 million grant to hire new firefighters.
The federal grant comes from the Department of Homeland Security and will allow the fire department to hire 30 new full time firefighters.
The Laredo fire chief says the grant will insure that a minimum of four firefighters will be on the scene per call, and will eventually take the place of those retiring.
The grant is enough to pay for the 30 positions for two years.

Most all of the firefighters here in town all they do is throw the football around, browse the internet on city computers and look for some "side action" here and there......oh sure...maybe a little brush fire now and then...and of course that very rare huge call once or twice a year but that's it..tooooo many lazy, iron pumping and overpaid fire station warmers. A very small group are dedicated and focused...but not the majority. God Bless u all.

Here at the 911 Center we're still trying to figure out how the fire dept. is larger and has more man power when they handle about 37,000 calls for service a year and the police dept. handles a little over 300,000 calls for service a year. In the whole country Laredo has got to be the only place where the fire dept. is lareger then its police dept.

Border violence is a hot topic and concern for the Nation. So how does Chief Maldonado only gets 22 Cops and Fire Chief Landin gets 30 Firefighters? Maybe Landin should write the grants for LPD. Chief Maldonado you and your staff are seriously dropping the ball.
