First Ever Cross-Border Trucking Program

Never before has a Mexican trucker been able to cross the border without having to stop in the United States and unload the truck. But tomorrow a Transportes Olympic tractor trailer driver will do just that. Our Lauren Kendrick has more on that story.
"It all goes back to the 1990's when the NAFTA negotiators knew that this would happen back then."
TAMIU economics professor Dr. Bill Gruben says a union group, the teamsters, had pressured Congress to outlaw Mexican trucks from traveling deep into the United States.
He says that ten years ago Mexico appealed that rule.
"The court decided unanimously against the United States and in favor of Mexico."
Friday will mark the first time that a trucker from Mexico won't have to stop in Laredo to unload the products.
The trucker will go straight from Apodaca Nuevo Leon, Mexico up to Garland near Dallas.
"Naturally the teamsters are very upset about it. They're demonstrating and saying that the Mexico truckers shouldn't come to the United States because they don't want to go to Mexico."
But professor Gruben feels there's another reason why the truckers from Mexico aren't being accepted in this new role.
"The real reason they don't want Mexican truckers to come here is because they will not make as much money driving trucks."
With the truckers from Mexico no longer having to stop in Laredo some are worried that will affect the local economy but Gruber says only time will tell.
"One could go in the other direction and say well these truckers are coming straight through so they're going to need more gas."
The trucker is expected to be in Mexico around noon. It could take a few hours to cross the border by the time all of the fan fare is finished.

Up and Coming accidents on Laredo's streets. Go to Mines road and look at all of the trailers making uturns right in front of law "enforcement" . These are not your average vehicles, they are homes on wheels!!! Will they see you driving next to them!!! Maybe,maybe not!!!

the cartels and chinos own these trucking companies. guess now drivers will be paid in pesos not dollars

WOW! they can cross into US, but we yet have to see AMERICAN trucks in Mexican soil....i wonder y?? What needs to be done in order to cross TXDOT needs to be at the 27mi marker checking EVERY single truck to make sure they are in compliance to TXDOT standards, Now TXDPS needs to also set up a hotline # for either texting or calling in unsafe driving! I no longer feel safe driving on IH35 anymore...i didnt feel safe 3 weeks ago...now more then ever i still dont feel safe.

soooo, they are not even checking the cargo or anything? what if they are carrying drugs or something else?
