Grant to Help Downtown Facades

By KGNS News

Laredo City Council had a busy agenda at tonight's meeting. One of the top items on their list was the scheduled improvements to revitalize downtown. City officials moved forward to implement a downtown facade restoration program. Through the community development block grant, business and property owners in the downtown area are encouraged to enhance their buildings' exterior appearances through restoration projects. The City will match up to $15,000 for those willing to make the improvements.

"We’re hoping that, that will encourage the businesses to make the improvements and hopefully attract more business."

Liendo says through the $106,000 grant, they should be ale to help around six to seven business owners.

Yes although I was far from being born in the good ole days, I have seen many beautiful pictures of how downtown laredo looked in those days. Now it is sad to see such once beautiful buildings just being rotting. For instance the St. Antony hotel right across from the federal court house. Such beautiful architectural design and yet its being used as a "crack house" hotel. The city should take over and make it into a beautiful hotel where out of town guests or even people who come from out of town on jury duty can stay in. Just a thought.

Yes , Good Idea, Make it look tacky outside the building and the same smelly cheap items inside.Downtown, in my opinion is dead, no amount of cash infusion is going to bring it back.I have hundreds of pictures of downtown in the good years 40s 50s 60s downtown, sadly is no more.
