Hundreds Of Laredoans Hope To Hit Mega Millions Jackpot

By KGNS News

Thousands if not millions of people across the country are hoping to win big Tuesday night. Pro 8 News reporter Brenda Medina was among the hundreds of people in Laredo hoping to hit the Mega Millions jackpot.

Many are calling it the lotto fever. Local store managers said they've been selling tickets at a brisk pace.

Cash registers in 41 states, including the ones at the Kwik Check convenience stores have been ringing nonstop.

"A lot of people have been buying them since the weekend actually,” said Yolanda Reynoso the assistant manager at the Kwik Check Convenience store.

Reynoso said this week's Mega Millions Jackpot sales have jumped significantly.

"One lady bought $100 worth. She paid me with a $100 bill and said, 'give me 100 tickets' I said ok,” said Reynoso. “That was surprising to me."

With just one buck, the lucky winner gets to cash in an estimated $355 million dollars and that has Laredoans making not one or two, but several trips back to the store.

"I purchased already twice and I'm going to get more right now,” said west Laredoan Rosa Navarro.

Some are even making stops across the country as they make their way back home from their holiday vacation.

"My dad just bought one on our way to Orlando and on our way back I bought two and my grandmother bought one,” Alfonso Sada from Monterrey Mexico said.

It's the second highest Mega Millions lottery jackpot in history, since 2007.

The fortunate person can take home a $224 million lump sum. Many are already dreaming of what they would do with all of that cash.

"Retirement and my family,” Navarro said. “Spread it with my family, I got a lot of family."

"With that money we can buy a house, cars, a better honeymoon,” added Sada.

Whichever store sells the winning ticket receives a bonus. Reynoso is also hoping the winner is kind enough to share their wealth.

"If it's a customer that knows you, maybe they'll give you something too right,” said Reynoso as she giggled. “You never know.”

One thing many people are unaware about is for an extra dollar per playboard, those who don't win the big jackpot can easily win a million dollars when they Megaply.

Have you ever seen those lines? Next time you do, look at the people in the line—Darryl and his other brother Darryl. These are not rich people. These are not smart people. Rich people and smart people would be in the line if the Lotto was a real wealth-building tool, but the truth is that the Lotto is a rip-off instituted by our government. Gambling is a tax on the poor and people who can't do math. Don't get mad at me for saying that. This is not a moral position; it is a mathematical, statistical fact. Studies show that the ZIP codes that spend four times what anyone else does on lottery tickets are those in lower-income parts of town.
