LISD Exposes Employees Social Security Numbers

By KGNS News

A massive e-mail containing personal information of about 450 LISD employees was sent to the staff of Zachry Elementary. Now LISD official's say they were able to contain the damage this e-mail could have caused.

"We had a campus that requested a list of vendors so that teachers could access those vendors and purchase supplies for the classroom. Unfortunately there are some employees throughout the district listed as vendors in order to facilitate providing them money for advanced travel when they did go on school business."

It was that list of vendors sent to about 75 staff members at the school.
We are told the technology department provided that list to the campus, and the campus then forwarded that list to the teachers.
That's how teachers gained access the social security numbers of over four hundred employees.

"Upon being aware of the mistake, the IT department quickly deleted files and did searchs to make sure that the files were not forwarded or printed to anybody else. "

Executive Director of Academic Accountability and Compliance, Carlos Rios, says the department discovered the problem the same day the e-mail was sent.
He explains the Technology Department was able to delete the e-mail from all the inboxes of the recipients within 48-hours.

"At this time we are very confident that the spread of the Social Security numbers was contained just to the district and there is no longer a threat as those numbers are out in cyber space and someone else can access them"
The Technology Department says they are investigating the case, but no one has been sanctioned as of today.
