"There is nothing more tragic than to see a young child mangled, dead unnecessarily coming to the emergency room."
Doctors over at the Laredo Medical Center say cases like Omar's happen more often than we know.
They are concerned about seeing an increase in young patients suffering injuries due to not being properly restrained.
"That brings my concern as a parent and as a physician that deals with this every day. We're human too and it' just not fair for a child that depends on an adult to be responsible for their safety. We are failing our children."
Dr. Pallicia says when a child is ejected from a vehicle most of the time they land head first on the street and by the time they get to a hospital, there's just very little left for them to do."
"Usually when you are ejected from a vehicle right there your chances of survival are extremely low because of the amount of energy that is required to expose a body from a vehicle is tremendous. We are talking about falling from a ten story building at least."
He believes parents are getting too confident in their ability to drive and are not thinking about what other drivers on the road might do.
He says a recent study conducted by the University of Washington reveals shocking statistics.
"They are saying that up to 45% of all the deaths and severe injuries in motor vehicle accidents with children involved are due precisely to either a lack of a restraint or inappropriate use of them."
9 year old Omar Cardenas arrived to the Laredo Medical Center with severe injuries, he later died in a San Antonio Hospital.
His case touched the physicians hearts. They hope this will prompt the community to buckle up their kids.
"We're here to help but we don't want to keep seeing these types of injuries that we know they are all completely preventable."

You see it all the time, children not wearing seat belts no child seats you know police have to see it but it is ignored, then after a tragedy the city asks for state or federal help tp pay overtime to set up check points to enforce the law, how about getting off the phone and look around you mister cop.

Sara you are absolutely correct! We see these kids jumping around inside the minivans and suv's all over town. It's sad to say that we have even seen babies in the mothers laps speeding down loop 20, that's ridiculous! Ultimately the parents are to blame but law enforcement should definitely do their part as well. Let's see someone take a stand and put an end to this senselessness, mayor Salinas here's your chance to do something positive for the well being of the children and the community I hope you will step up to the plate!

If parents aren't smart enough to protect their own children then they get what's coming to them. Most of the time stupid parents breed stupid kids to let them fly out of cars and land on the street. Natural selection. Why do we all think we need the police to force us to do what we should be doing for our own good?
