Laredo's Retail is Reported Higher than Other Cities

By KGNS News

It is during the Christmas shopping season that the retail business usually brings in most of its yearly revenues. This year is different for Laredo, not only is the business doing better, but it is actually doing better than other major border towns.
President of the Laredo Chamber of Commerce, Miguel Conchas, says the numbers for the retail season so far are better in Laredo than other cities such as El Paso, Brownsville and even McAllen. He says that “the figures that the state reported were that Laredo was doing nineteen percent over last year. I mean that’s extremely good".
He says that is due to two kinds of markets, the paisanos that come through Laredo on their way to Mexico, and the shoppers that come to Laredo specifically for that one reason. Conchas said "the shoppers do come int, those are the guys, the families that live in Mexico, the consumers, the ones that consume heavily"
But with all that revenue being brought to the retailers there is one area of town that is unfurtunately not doing as strong. Down town Laredo is going throuhg a very slow season, some business owners are saying this is the worst they've seen in over 10 years. but the question is, why is it so slow for downtown?
Miguel Conchas had the answer for that, he said "it's a number of factors, one of them in particular for exaple is the parking. Many people find it easier to go through larege parking lots. Downtown has always had a problem with the parking situation"
He also says sometimes it is easier for shoppers to go drive up on I- 35 and shop in north Laredo.
But even with the difficule times downtown Laredo is facing, he says Laredo is already seing an improvement compared to last year's numbers

Maybe if the downtown area had decent parking and restrooms, people would be encouraged to go. Many of the merchants themselves are rude, and they don't lend customers their restrooms. Be hospitable, and customers will remember you and reccomend your stores.

Laredo might be up in retail but you can't compare it the McAllen metro area and the Valley which is 100 times better than Laredo in every aspect. That's only my opinion of course.

It would be higher if Laredo Stores had better customer service. I know of a lot of people that live in Laredo that travel to San Antonio just to shop because of the customer service.
