"That's really an encouraging thing to have somebody from here...a native from Laredo all the way in the NBA." Since news broke that a graduate from Alexander High School would be taking the position as head coach of an NBA team, Lareodans haven't been able to contain their excitement and pride for Kaleb Canales. "Do you think you'll be a fan of the Portland Trailblazers? Absolutely that will be my first choice from now." One woman we spoke to says this is something positive for the gateway city since many times people associate our city with the violence across the border. "Since most people don't know about Laredo and where it's at it hopefully it will bring more recognition of this wonderful city so I think it's great." Laredo's own Kaleb Canales has made a name for himself as the head coach of the Portland Trailblazers and is proving anything is possible with a little hard work. "He had to sacrifice a lot. He started off at the bottom level. He kept his heart where it was and he worked hard and it paid off for him." As a former co-worker of the now well known NBA coach, Jerry Vera says he could not be happier for Canales. "We coached at the same high school when he was here before. Many times it's a dream come true for a coach at a high school level to be able to reach the professional level. As far as being a fan, I'm still rooting for the spurs but I'll be watching his games."
