Laredo's First Farmer's Market

By KGNS News

It's a popular trend across the country and Laredo has now joined in by presenting it's very first farmers market. Our Antonia Mejia went out and has all the details.

It certainly is a new event for our city and something Laredo's Downtown Main Street Association has planned for some time. Not only do many say it's a great opportunity for farmers and bakers to present their products, but it's something Laredoans appear to enjoy. It's a market full of homegrown fruits, vegetables and lots of homemade cookies and cupcakes. Something many people are definitely wanting to be a part of. Like Raquel Salas who says: "When I saw in the newspaper and Pro 8 news that they were going to have a farmers market, we just decided to come and try it and this is the first time ever that we have ever done this and it's wonderful."
Raquel Salas is a vendor at Laredo's very first farmers market. And as she displays her fruits from her local ranch, she's glad she can be a part of the new event. "Well everybody has been so friendly and everbody has a lot to offer and just a very enjoyable way to spend a Saturday morning."
Organizers say one of the best aspects about this innovation is that just about anyone can join in. Viviana Frank, an organizer for the event comments: "You don't have to be a certified farmer all we do is we expect people grow their own fruits and vegetables you can come from up 200 miles away."
As a way to also help the farmer's market be a success, organizers say they are working to bring forth a community garden and kitchen that will be available for all everyone to use. "The idea is to get local entrepreneur families to also be involved and to start growing and to come and share their products with the rest of Laredo."

The farmer's market will take place the third Saturday of every month for the next 12 months. One of the main goals for the Downtown Main Street Association is to eventually make this a weekly event.

Unless the vendors at the market accept lone star cards or food stamps the market wont last too long. laredoans dont eat vegetables or fruit. only taco p, flaming hots, and soda.
