A water pump, vandalized, by unknown suspects. The only water supply for many residents of a west side colonia.
Our Lauren Kendrick has more details
Webb County Commissioner Jaime Canales says he found out about the broken water pump at the Fred and Anita Bruni Community Center on Saturday and is trying to get it fixed as soon as possible.
"There was vandalism Friday night. We don't know the details of it but I can assure you they will have water by tomorrow evening."
Residents of the Las Penitas area depend on this one water pump. now that it's broken, they have to drive five miles to get their water.
"It's more of a hassle, more time. You have to go back and forth to get the water and it takes time and gas and money to run back and forth."
Penitas resident Jesus Santana adds that not everyone has the means to drive to the other pump for water. And they shouldn't be inconvenienced like they are, especially no for this long.
"If they don't have a good truck to move their trailers, they can't carry their water."
Ramiro Hernandez is helping a friend who lives in the colonia who doesn't have a way to get to the water pump. He doesn't understand why no one has come to fix it.
"They should send somebody. I know they can and they should send somebody. yhey need to fix the problem. It's a big problem."
The main concern for many residents of the colonia is wondering how to get their children ready for school without water.
"It's a problem you have to fix for children that go to school to go clean and with clean clothes."
Hernandez says that kids need to be clean when they go to school and without water they can't take a shower or wash clothes. County Commissioner Jaime Canales agrees that is a huge problem.
"We are very concerned about that too but we are working really rapidly in this matter."
Commissioner Canales wants to remind people in the colonia that they can apply for funding for water. It's free and he says mostly everyone qualifies.
