"We were actually summoned to the store with the alarm ringing just after 4 a.m."
Owner of Petland, Joe Carvalho, recalls what happened this morning. Three men broke in to his store and stole four animals. Of those, there were three puppies taken as well as the face of Petland, Max the dancing bird.
"Very calculated..took only a couple minutes and clearly they came in with bolt cutters. They knew what they were going to do."
This isn't the first time animals have been stolen from petland and carvalho feels something needs to be done.
"I do believe that Laredo is certainly one of the worst for pet theft in the nation and we do have to stand up."
But to Carvalho and his wife, Max is more than a pet. He's family.
"To us it's like a kidnapping. Max has been a family member for 13 years."
Carvalho's wife Laura, says she has raised max since he was two months old and she can't believe he's gone.
"It's like losing my son..it truly is. It's like he's been kidnapped only we don't think there will be a ransom call."
The surveillance video shows one of the thieves walking out of the store with Max in a bag. The Carvalhos are worried that whoever took Max won't be able to care for him properly.
"Max can't survive on his own. He's very picky, he won't eat. He'll just stop eating. Max will die if he doesn't come back to us."
Although they are saddened by their beloved bird being stolen, they are hopeful he will be returned.
"We're here with his cage. The door's open and we're hoping for him to come back."

Isn't that comeback getting a little old by now, M.C.? I guess you just can't muster up a reply that's not crude and ignorant. And keep in mind I said nothing offensive to you, simply tried to say that to some people, their pets do matter plenty and can be like their children. I even agreed on one of your points, idiot.

Hey MC @ 4:52, to some ppl their pets ARE just like children. No bird is worth a human life? Maybe not to you. But they had raised this bird since he was a baby; of course losing him would be devastating. I will agree, though, that they should've never left him overnight at the store.

What about my 1950 Schwinn that was stolen about 5 months ago? It belonged to my grandfather who passed away many years ago and it has a lot of sentimental value. It had been part of the family for 60 years.

It's an inside job!!! Petland is way overpriced, from food to animals. In fact I've even heard of their own employees talking to customers about working an outside deal for a pet. Start looking for answered within your department. You even said they were prepared!

How can you compare a son to a bird?Shame on you for saying that.Any parent that has lost a son or daughter will tell you that.No bird is worth a human life. And if you loved the bird ,why did you not take it home every night.
