More Help From Webb County

By KGNS News

Help is on the way for families who have not been approved for health care benefits due to their income.
County Commissioners aim to help those families who don't qualify just because they make a little more money than what the state requires.
Carolina Garcia has that story.
Webb County Commissioners approved a plan to help those families that are borderline.
Judge Danny Valdez says this program aims to relax the guidelines because making a little more money does not mean a family is not in need help. He said, “There are some people that are just border line. They need the service, but because they don't meet the income guidelines, they are left out."
He is referring to those families who are desperate for help but are not approved for benefits because they make as little as one hundred dollars more that what the states allows. Valdez says, “By relaxing these guidelines, we'll be able to provide more people with these types of services."
Missing the guideline for a couple of dollars is something a local resident understands first hand. Pedro Cante says it is very difficult to be in that situation. The resident says, "Es duro a como esta la sitacion economica entender eso...”
Cante says it's difficult and appreciates the help the County is now providing.
The budget for this service is set to be 2.1 million dollars. Judge Danny Valdez said, "It's something that is needed. It is not a big impact to the budget. There is money budgeted already for these types of services. You're not looking at a lot but we'll be impacting more lives."

This help will be available starting tomorrow.

If this is necessary they should raise the income guide lines after they weed out all the people from Mexico receiving benefits.

A typical knee-jerk reaction to a past tragedy.

2.1 million dollars "not a big impact" that is the kind of thinking we need more of.
