Congressman Henry Cuellar has introduced a bill named after a fallen Laredo ICE agent.
The Jaime Zapata Border Enforcement Security Task Force Act of 2011 would enhance border security and reduce security threats by providing more funding for law enforcement along the border.
Zapata was killed back on February 15th in Mexico when Zeta gang members ambushed him and another agent on a Mexican highway.
Cuellar says when it comes to maintaining border security, collaboration and cooperation is key.
He says these task forces along the border help improve information sharing between federal, state, local, and international law enforcement.
The bill would give congress the ability to oversee authorization and appropriation of funds for these units, which were previously under the department of Homeland Security.
